Shaleeha G'ntamobi's stirring new play about an alcoholic black mother and her card sharp son trying to get out of the projects has just been accepted into the nation's preeminent theater festival. Trouble is, Shaleeha G'ntamobi doesn't exist, except in the imagination of wannabe-playwright Danny Larsen (Jonathan Groff), who created her as a kind of affirmative-action nom-de-plume. The American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact launched the all-star Broadway premiere of "8". The play, which chronicles the historic trial in the federal legal challenge to California's Proposition 8, was written by AFER Founding Board Member and Academy Award-winning writer Dustin Lance Black and directed by Tony Award-winning actor and director Joe Mantello. The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) presented a special preview of the 2011 Festival selections, featuring Ennio: The Living Paper Cartoon, F*cking Hipsters, Ghostlight, Greenwood, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, The Kid Who Would Be Pope, Kiki Baby, Outlaws, and This One Girl's Story. The NYMF runs from September 26th - October 16th in theatres around Manhattan. You can find full coverage from the preview here.

Manhattan Theatre Club presents the Broadway premiere of VENUS IN FUR, by the acclaimed new play by David Ives. Directed by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie, the show will star Tony nominee Nina Arianda reprising her acclaimed breakthrough performance and Emmy Award nominee Hugh Dancy (Journey's End, "The Big C"). Directed by Daniel Goldstein and choreographed by Tony Award nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific), GODSPELL begins preview performances at Circle in the Square Theatre.The show stars an incredible and diverse company of 10 young actors, lead by Hunter Parrish as Jesus and Wallace Smith as Judas, and co-starring Uzo Aduba, Nick Blaemire, Celisse Henderson, Morgan James, Telly Leung, Lindsay Mendez, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle and George Salazar. FOX's hit television show GLEE made its season three return on Tuesday, and next week's episode will mark the return of Tony winner Idina Menzel as Rachel's mom, Shelby Corcoran. Chichester's Festival 2011 closes with Sweeney Todd, the musical commonly acknowledged to be Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece, in a cast led by distinguished musical performer Michael Ball and Oscar-nominated actress Imelda Staunton.Set in nineteenth century London and laced with Sondheim's characteristically brilliant wit and dark humour, the musical depicts Sweeney Todd's savage quest for justice and retribution after years of false imprisonment. At a press conference on Wednesday, September 21st at the Foxwoods Theatre, Reeve Carney, star of SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark, Broadway's most popular new show, announced a new initiative to honor "Everyday Heroes." Flanked by the show's Spider-Men, Carney explained the details of the "Everyday Heroes" program (outlined below), before introducing the program's first honoree: Nurse Practitioner Diane Pagan. The on stage premiere of NEWSIES is now running at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. The musical is based on the 1899 true story of a courageous group of scrappy newsboys who become unlikely heroes when they rally forces to fight an unscrupulous newspaper tycoon. "NEWSIES" features a book by Harvey Fierstein, lyrics by Jack Feldman and music by Alan Menken. Based on the Disney film written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White. The national tour of THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a new musical based on the bizarre and beloved family of characters created by legendary cartoonist Charles Addams kicked off September 15 at the Mahalia Jackson Theater in New Orleans. The show runs in New Orleans through September 24th, and features Tony Award® nominee Douglas Sills as Gomez and Sara Gettelfinger as Morticia. Click here for more production shots from the tour.

Yestersay, The Mountaintop starring Samuel L. Jackson (DR. Martin Luther King, Jr.,) and Angela Bassett, began previews in Katori Hall's highly anticipated new work, The Mountaintop. The Mountaintop is directed by the Tony-nominated Kenny Leon (Fences, A Raisin in the Sun) and will open officially on October 13, 2011 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
