The Minneapolis Musical Theatre (MMT) has announced that the award-winning musical "Jerry Springer - The Opera" will open its 2007-2008 season.

"MMT is only the third theatre company in the United States to be granted permission to produce this work while the authors continue to guide its journey towards an anticipated Broadway opening. The only work in British History to win Best Musical in all of their major awards: Olivier Awards, Critic's Choice, Evening Standard, and What's On Stage - along with many other awards; Jerry Springer - The Opera is a fascinating mix of the highest form of art and the lowest form of culture - opera and daytime television. In turns hilarious and heartbreaking, Jerry Springer - The Opera presents a series of unusual characters who each are desperate for 'their Jerry Springer moment,'" state production notes.

"With music by Richard Thomas and book and lyrics by Stewart Lee and Richard Thomas, Act I, finds Jerry in very familiar territory (guests with lots of secrets). In Act 2, Jerry finds himself hosting in quite a different place as he is forced to experience the worst day of his life, and his guests take the level of debate between good and bad to operatic heights."

Jerry Springer - The Opera will be directed by Steven Meerdink with musical direction by Suzanne Reyburn (the team behind Tommy and Chess at MMT).  The production will feature a cast of twenty.

"Minneapolis Musical Theatre is a perfect place for this area premiere," states MMT Artistic Director Steven Meerdink. "We have had great success with daring musical projects from Bat Boy to Tommy to La Cage aux Folles. We have an audience that embraces these passionate and provocative choices. And, frankly, what other theatre in town would stage a show with a tap dance number featured the Ku Klux Klan.

The Minneapolis Musical Theatre is expected to announce its full 2007-2008 season in April. For more information about the Minneapolis Musical Theatre, visit MMT's website at www.aboutmmt.org.
