Character Breakdown: RAGTIME Cast Unpacks Their Roles

Ladies with parasols, fellows with tennis balls, radical anarchists, eccentric millionaires... Ragtime is filled with memorable characters- some of them being real, historical figures and other s not. How do they fit into the story?

Ragtime is the sweeping musical adaptation of E. L. Doctorow’s classic novel that follows three fictional families in pursuit of the American Dream at the dawn of the 20th Century: Black pianist Coalhouse Walker, Jr. and his beloved Sarah, Jewish immigrant Tateh and his little girl, and a wealthy white family led by matriarch Mother. All grasping for the same dream, if only they can hold onto it.

Caissie Levy plays Mother. "[Mother] is someone who starts off in the show thinking she knows who she is and thinking she knows what she wants out of life," she explained. "The thing I think I admire the most about her is that she isn't a complacent woman. She has her eyes open, and over the course of the show she allows people to change her. In doing so, she has the bravery to listen instead of speak.
