Bloomingdale School Of Music Presents INTO THE FUTURE! Modern Jazz + Avant Pop

Bloomingdale School of Music (BSM) welcomes the warmer weather with a free concert of new music, entitled Into the Future! Modern Jazz + Avant Pop on Friday, May 18th at 7:00 pm led by BSM faculty member alto saxophonist Daniel Bennett. This FREE community concert will be held at the school's home site located at 323 West 108th Street between Broadway and Riverside Drive in Manhattan. Seating is limited. BSM faculty member Daniel Bennett presents a concert of original modern jazz works fused with elements of surf rock and avant-pop. Bennett is joined by renowned guitarist Nat Janoff and fusion drummer Matthew Feick performing music they recorded and performed at the Blue Note.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Daniel Bennett * Faculty Member, Saxophone/Flute/Piccolo/Clarinet/Bass Clarinet/Oboe New York saxophonist Daniel Bennett has been hailed as one of the most original and unpredictable musical voices of his generation. Insite Magazine calls Bennett's music, "refreshingly capricious and trippy." The Village Voice raves, "Saxophonist Daniel Bennett makes hay with an airy approach that's buoyant enough to conjure notions of East African guitar riffs and Steve Reich's pastoral repetition." The Boston Herald describes Bennett's music as "exploratory Folk-Jazz hybrid." Timeout New York raves, "Daniel Bennett airs his lilting, potentially hypnotic compositions!" Daniel Bennett recently composed and performed the original musical scores for Frankenstein and Brave Smiles at the Hudson Guild Theatre in Manhattan. Recent off-Broadway theater performances include the North American premier of Legacy Falls and a revival of Swingtime Canteen at Cherry Lane Theatre. Daniel Bennett recently played woodwinds in Blank! The Musical, the first fully improvised Off-Broadway musical to launch on a national stage. Entertainment Hour raved, "Mike Descoteaux (piano), Daniel Bennett (reeds) and Al Vetere (drums) accompanied the cast expertly and twisted from our randomly chosen notes an impressive score WITHOUT an active conductor or sheet music!" Nat Janoff, Guest Artist, Electric Guitar Guitarist, composer and teacher Nat Janoff, has been working steadily in the contemporary jazz scene for the past 15 years. Nat's earliest experience with music started with the piano. Then, he switched to bass. After hearing Eddie Van Halen, Nat had to play guitar. Growing up in the 80's, Nat's musical interests were all things rock and metal and Nat earned a reputation for being one of the best shred guitarist in the area. Nat's transition from metal and rock guitar to jazz occurred when he sought out a platform to improvise for longer than the standard rock riff. That, and hearing Mahavishnu Orchestra's Birds of Fire for the first time. Pursue jazz he did and after earning his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance from William Paterson University in 1996, Nat set to work forging his own musical path. The first marker on that path was Nat's debut album, Looking Through featuring the rhythm section of world renowned electric bassist, Matthew Garrison and drummer Gene Lake, putting Nat on the map as both a player and a composer.

Matt Feick, Guest Artist, Drums/Percussion Matt has been playing drums, percussion, and piano since age 5. He completed his graduate program at the University of California, San Diego, where he had extensive private study with west coast drum virtuosos Peter Erskine and Duncan Moore, Matt now lives in NYC and studies with jazz master Gregory Hutchinson. Matt is in the percussion section for the Manhattan Wind Ensemble, he plays drums in several gigging rock and jazz bands, and he also works various musicals and off-Broadway shows throughout the year in New York City.
