Bailey Contemporary Arts Presents SOCIAL OBJECTS

Bailey Contemporary Arts (BaCA) in Pompano Beach is proud to present Social Objects, an exhibition featuring ceramic works from the Socially Engaged Craft Collective. This expanding network of artists from around the country creates a wide range of art projects that are rooted in the rich history of ceramic objects. While many of the pieces are utilitarian in nature, the artwork comes to life thought its messages, tackling diverse subjects such as gender roles, the environment and migrant worker issues. "This exhibition expands the parameters of what we commonly view as ceramic art," said Juliana Forero, Ph.D., BaCA's gallery curator. "And, it represents the diversity in the field. This will not be a typical ceramics display, in fact, many of the installations offer an interactive aspect."

The exhibition displays objects that developed from the lineage of ceramic craft and simultaneously engage viewers in a social experience surrounding the object. The role that potters and artisans play in society has changed, and what the Craft Collective does reflects that change. These objects serve a social function beyond a utility or aesthetic, they have the potential to share interactions, create experiences and build community.

One installation, entitled the "Frisk Whisk" by Cheyenne Rudolph, features a table with kitchen items created out of clay and challenges our gender roles. Another piece, "Upstream" by Anna Metcalfe, encourages viewers to share stories about water, which will then be incorporated into tea cups. And, at the closing reception, when three of the artists will be present, guests can participate in "Waffle Toss" by Forest Gard - tossing ceramic waffles into a toaster and "Weaving Dialogs" by Lauren Karle and Jeni Hansen Gard, where strangers will participate in intimate conversations following prompts embroidered on tablecloths.

About the Pompano Beach Redevelopment Agency (CRA)

A Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is a dependent district established by City government for the purpose of carrying out redevelopment activities that include reducing or eliminating blight, improving the economic health of an area, and encouraging public and private investments in a CRA district. The CRA is governed by State Statutes, Chapter 163, Part III. The Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency is funded through Tax Increment Financing (TIF). The funds are collected as property values increase and a portion of that increase is captured by the Agency. TIF raises revenue for redevelopment efforts without raising taxes.
