Ailey II Returns to Popejoy Hall

Ailey II returns to Popejoy Hall Tuesday, February 19 at 7:30 pm. Bringing modern dance, the company was founded to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programs for all people. As a company within the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Ailey II has been performing for over forty years.The modern dance performance consists of six men and six women performing pieces that artistically portray the story of African-American resilience. This year's repertory includes Alvin Ailey's "Revelations" as well as current Artistic Director of Ailey II, Troy Powell's "Ebb and Flow."

Choreographies are accompanied by a vibrantly colored set and intricate yet simplistic costumes. In incorporating these elements with the final project, Ailey II exhibits a unique and creative dance performance.Originally the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, Ailey II showcases the best young dance talent by pairing dancers with some of today's most outstanding, emerging choreographers. Sylvia Waters, personally selected by Alvin Ailey, held her position as master dancer and choreographer until 2012, when she became the Artistic Director Emerita. It was at this time that Troy Powell became the Artistic Director.Alvin Ailey, founder of Ailey II, grew up in Texas during a turbulent time for African-American Civil Rights.

In an attempt to escape the intense racial segregation of the 1940s and '50s, Ailey's mother relocated the family to Los Angeles. There, Ailey became intrigued by the arts, even studying with dance pioneer Lester Holton. Holton passed away in 1953 and, after only a few years of dance education, Ailey assumed the role of Artistic Director of Horton's Dance School after Holton passed away in 1953.
