The new and captivating production of CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIE opens at the Teatro at Montecasino, Johannesburg for two shows only on Saturday, 17 August 2013 at 8pm and Sunday, 18 August 2013 at 14h00. Tickets are on sale at Computicket.

Brought to South Africa by Charl van Heyningen Enterprises, CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIE presents an evening of unequalled artistic entertainment performed by a troupe of the world's finest circus performers whose graceful and sometimes death-defying movements will leave audiences spellbound. CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIE is set to contemporary and popular classical music, played by the esteemed Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of world-renowned conductor, Theodore Kuchar. The fusion of movement and sound is perfectly executed to bring the magic of cirque to the concert hall. It's a sublime treat for eyes and ears.

Hailed by critics and audiences in Europe, America and Australia, CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIE features an interesting array of circus acts ranging from jugglers to strongmen, acrobats, aerial flyers and contortionists. Some of these performers are world record holders while others are Olympians or gold medal winners of international competitions. The highly acclaimed aerial gymnast, Christine Van Loo has performed at the Grammy Awards, the Winter Olympics and the Miss Universe pageant.

The unique concept of combining circus acts with "the classics" played by a full orchestra is best summed up by the USA's Express Milwaukee as "the most exciting idea to hit the symphonic pops circuit". Highlights include different excerpts from Bizet's CARMEN, one complemented by ring juggler Vladimir Tsarkov and another by Alexander Streltsov with his spinning frame and cube; Wagner's RIDE OF THE VALKYRIES, featuring Sagiv Ben Benyamin's aerial rope work; and Tchaikovsky's Valse from SWAN LAKE, accompanied by the spectacular aerial gymnastics of Alexander Strelsov and Christine Van Loo.

The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra is celebrating its thirteenth year with renewed determination to be nationally and internationally recognized as South Africa's leading Philharmonic Orchestra. Following its recent performance of the world premiere of the Credo oratorio, the JPO welcomes the opportunity to make its debut at the Teatro at Montecasino, especially in the company of a troupe of colourful performers!

It is an honour for the JPO to play the CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIE soundtrack conducted by Theodore Kuchar, one of the most prolifically recorded conductors of the past decade whose recordings exceed over 90 albums. Mr Kuchar has toured the USA with the Czech Symphony Orchestra and guest conducting engagements include the BBC Symphony, BBC National Symphony Orchestra of Wales, Berlin Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra, Israel Symphony Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. He has collaborated with major artists including James Galway, Jessye Norman, Lynn Harrell, Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Mstislav Rostropovich, Sarah Chang and Joshua Bell (who recently performed in South Africa) and Frederica von Stade, among others.

Mr Kuchar is no stranger to South Africa. He previously conducted the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and most recently appeared in Johannesburg in June 2013 conducting the Kwazulu Natal-Philharmonic Orchestra, with the violinist Sarah Chang at the Lindner Auditorium and in Soweto.

"The circus acts are some of the very best in the world, the music to which they will perform is well known, vibrant and exciting. We are thrilled to have the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by maestro Kuchar, as the featured orchestra," says Charl van Heyningen, SA promoter of Cirque de la Symphonie who added; "Audiences and classical music enthusiasts are in for a treat as the aerial athletes and acrobats turn the concert into a three-dimensional entertainment extravaganza.
