Adelaide Majoor in RUST COLOURED SKIRT

RUST COLOURED SKIRT, presented by Alfred Hinkel's Garage Productions, will be performed at Artscape on Sunday 20th July 2014 in aid of Cape Town dance legend Christopher Kindo who is currently battling a life threatening illness.

When Alfred Hinkel and John Lindon came to Cape Town to audition for Sue Parker's Jazzart all-male company in 1981, one of the people who really inspired them was Christopher Kindo, to the extent that he influenced the direction their lives would take. Upon hearing about Christopher's illness they offered to perform RUST COLOURED SKIRT, their newest work, that premiered recently at the 2014 Grahamstown National Arts Festival as a benefit in aid of him.

RUST COLOURED SKIRT is an autobiographical consideration of dance as a medium through which life is experienced, from the perspectives of differing life stages. Audiences can expect a quirky and honest exploration of things that matter, as Debbie Goodman-Bhyatt (formerly of Jazzart and Jagged Dance) returns to the stage after 15 years, with Hinkel himself. Two youngsters - Adelaide Majoor and Byron Klassen - playfully juxtapose their biographies with their elders' in a narrative which craftily interweaves their personal stories.

Christopher Kindo is a living legend and though some of the younger generation are not aware of it, he is one of the people responsible for changing the face of contemporary dance in South Africa. He is a South African dancer and choreographer, and one of the co-founders of the Jazzart Dance Academy in Cape Town. He received his Royal Academy of Dance training in Cape Town with several excellent teachers, at the UCT School of Dance, and also at the Boston Ballet Academy in the USA. He was a member of CAPAB and PACT Ballet companies amongst others, performing principal roles, with his unique grace and style earning him great acclaim.

Christopher has won various awards including the 1991 FNB Vita award for Best Male Dancer. He is synonymous with being someone who lives life to the full, and is a supremely talented and gifted man who has given selflessly to dance his whole life, both to the professional and community dance scenes. A great many dancers, teachers, directors and choreographers have been challenged and stimulated by his marvelous work and he has had audiences leap to their feet to applaud his artistic contributions to dance in SA.

The dance fraternity of SA is appealing to the Cape Town dance community to assist in the "Gift of Support" by attending this upcoming fund raising benefit performance of RUST COLOURED SKIRT at the Artscape Theatre on Sunday, 20th July at 6pm. Tickets cost R80 to R120 via Computicket or 0214217695.
