by BWW News Desk - May 28, 2015

He doesn't want to say 'Bye, bye' to Miss American Pie just yet. In the summer of 2013 and early 2014, BroadwayWorld New York cabaret editor/reviewer and Cabaret Scenes Magazine feature writer Stephen Hanks fulfilled his long-held fantasy to perform a cabaret show based on the songbook of 1970s pop singer/songwriter Don McLean, who wrote the classic song, 'American Pie.' Hanks' show BEYOND AMERICAN PIE: THE DON McLEAN SONGBOOK was staged four times at Manhattan's Metropolitan Room and once at Stage 72 (The Triad), and Hanks says the reaction from reviewers and audience members was surprisingly positive. Now Hanks is bringing back his Don McLean 'Tribute show,' only this time as DON McLEAN: STORYTELLER, and he'll be performing it at the World Famous Don't Tell Mama 'Brick Room' on Saturday, June 20 and Monday, June 29, both shows at 7 pm. BWW Reviews: The Show's Not Over Until Baby Sings - DIRTY DANCINGBWW Reviews: The Show's Not Over Until Baby Sings - DIRTY DANCING
by Amanda Finn - May 27, 2015

Dirty Dancing is essentially a stage Tribute to the film from which its based, which is evident from the dialogue as it's taken almost verbatim from the movie. As are the iconic songs - even though only a fraction of the performers actually sing. Those actors that do sing are not main characters, which is even more of a shame since so many of the performers (Gillian Abbott and Samuel Pergande as Baby and Johnny respectively) have backgrounds in voice. The fact that the main characters do not even utter a single note is baffling to anyone who is familiar with musical theatre. (more...)

Pacific Symphony Gala Celebrates Carl St.Clair's 25 Years in Orange CountyPacific Symphony Gala Celebrates Carl St.Clair's 25 Years in Orange County
by BWW News Desk - May 26, 2015

?More than 400 guests dressed in their finest gathered on Saturday, May 16, to participate in one of Pacific Symphony's most heartwarming galas to date, “Celebrating Carl St.Clair's 25 Years in Orange County.” Honoring the beloved music director's 25 years with the orchestra, the 2015 gala took place at the Hotel Irvine, where the sights, tastes and aromas of Orange County were center stage. Thanks to the vision of co-chairs Lynn Freeman and Ellie Gordon, the focus was also on fun and celebration, as guests arrived to revel in an OC classic: a beach party! Donning sunglasses and flip–flops, attendees engaged in friendly competition, playing games such as ultimate Frisbee and “Hang 10,” while sipping cocktails and enjoying a surf band rocking Beach Boys tunes. The evening transitioned into a memorable Tribute to Maestro St.Clair as guests feasted in an enchanting orange grove. After an exciting live auction and generous “Fund-A-Dream,” Symphony musicians surprised the audience with a “flash mob” performance of Beethoven's Ninth with a rock overlay, which led straight into the party tunes of JT & Friends.  (more...)

Splendidly Directed (and Written) by Walter Willison, with Musical Direction by Alex Rybeck, Bass Accompaniment from Ray Kiddain, and Dance Supervision by Yvonne Marceau, the delicious production (one really can't call it a concert despite lack of dialogue) was fluid, polished, and imaginative in its use of the room. From leads to the chorus, voices were strong, commitment thorough. In the audience, Tommy Tune must've had a helluva time. We did. (more...)

Stacy Sullivan is a warm and amusing storyteller with an entertaining family history. The first six numbers of her new Metropolitan Room show on Thursday night, Since You Asked (after the Judy Collins song), are bridged by tales of her parents, grandparents, great grandparents, and her upbringing in Oklahoma.
