Cirque du Soleil's VAREKAI Begins Next Week at Barclays Center

Cirque du Soleil returns to Brooklyn next week with its newest arena show, Varekai, which will perform at Barclays Center (620 Atlantic Avenue) in Brooklyn from July 30 through August 3 for seven performances only. After 11 years of touring the world under the blue and yellow Big Top, Varekai began a new adventure this past December touring the world in arenas worldwide and in some markets never visited before. He said: I think they thought about the outside before they thought about the inside. The problems of the Joan Sutherland [Opera Theatre] are extreme. Pacific Northwest Ballet raises the velvet curtain on its 2014-2015 season with George Balanchine's Jewels. Costumed in emerald green, ruby red and luminous white, the trio of gems in Jewels pays Tribute to golden ages of music and dance. Evoking the birthplace of Romantic ballet, Emeralds' graceful clouds of tulle whisper French courtesy, fashion, and fragrance. A sassy, jazzy collaboration with composer Igor Stravinsky, Rubies mirrors the carefree spontaneity of America, Balanchine's beloved adopted country. The splendor of Diamonds recalls the great choreographer's heritage, so that "if the entre Imperial Russian inheritance of ballet were lost, Diamonds would still tell us of its essence" (Mary Clarke and Clement Crisp). Surrealist Burlesque returns to the Coney Island USA Sideshow by the Seashore stage with its 6th incarnation of what has been hailed by the press as "Striptease meets Socrates" (Brooklyn Paper). This years' Surrealist Burlesque presents Flaming Creatures, a Tribute to Jack Smith's ground-breaking work that pioneered experimental film-making and representations of gender fluidity in the early 1960s. Considered by many to be a founding father of performance art and an innovator of underground film, Jack Smith's film was officially deemed "obscene" by a New York Criminal Court. Flaming Creatures at Coney Island USA features stars of the art world and burlesque stage who have created acts in the spirit of Smith's queer, Utopic landscape. Starring Carmelita Tropicana, Dirty Martini, Dr. Lucky, Jennifer Miller, Jason Mejias, Julie Atlas Muz, and Poison Eve. With production numbers featuring the Dali Dancers. For our 48th Kritzerland show we're proud to present a salute to some incredible female lyricists of the musical theatre, mostly Carolyn Leigh, the brilliant lyricist of such Broadway shows as Little Me, Wildcat, Peter Pan and others, as well as such classic pop songs as 'Witchcraft' and 'The Best Is Yet to Come,' as well as other great female lyricists like Lynn Ahrens (Once on this Island, Ragtime, Seussical), Carol Hall (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas), Marsha Norman (The Secret Garden), Gretchen Cryer (I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking it on the Road), Fran Landesman (The Nervous Set, 'Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most'), Amanda McBroom ('The Rose', Heartbeats) and Carole Bayer Sager (They're Playing Our Song). Kritzerland's Bruce Kimmel has recorded many of the lyricists above and has chosen the usual Kritzerland colorful and eclectic program, a mix of the well- known and the unknown.
