by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Oct 23, 2014

From Here to Eternity, Gone with the Wind, In Harm's Way, War and Peace…Classic literature and film where war in any century or country divides families, loved ones and nations. Renaissance Theaterworks opens their 2014-2015 season in the Studio Theatre continuing this compelling tradition with the Midwest premiere of Amelia-Playwright Alex Webb's soul-searching Tribute to a woman trapped in America's struggle to end slavery. Beginning in 1861, the 'Great' Civil War tore homes, the land and lives figuratively and literally asunder for four years while the subtle aftereffects rage hidden in some human hearts 150 years later. For DIRECTOR'S CHOICE, the second program of Pacific Northwest Ballet's 2014-2015season, Artistic Director Peter Boal selects two PNB premieres paired with stunning repertory works in this absorbing mixed-bill. Opening the program, David Dawson's breath-taking, hyper-extended A Million Kisses to my Skin references the intoxicating bliss dancers experience while performing. Rassemblement, Nacho Duato's poignant work set to slave songs by Haitian artist Toto Bissainthe, voices communal yearning and resistance in a climate of oppression. Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's (Cylindrical Shadows) critically-acclaimed signature piece, Before After, a PNB premiere, unmasks the turmoil just before a relationship ends. The performance closes with Debonair, a world premiere by New York City Ballet's rising star Justin Peck, praised for "electrifying classical dance with [his] fresh vision" (Wall Street Journal). The program also includes a musical prelude to shine the spotlight on the nationally renowned PNB Orchestra, currently celebrating its 25th Anniversary season. If you are a fan of ska music, there is much to like about the Belgrade Theatre's production of Three Minute Heroes. Dubbed as the 2 Tone Musical, the production follows fictional characters trying to make it in the music industry. With the band consisting of a diverse group of young people, 2 Tone was the appropriate record company that they were trying to win over. There was also an ongoing racist battle during 1979-1981 when the show is set. Coventry decided to put on a benefit in 1981 to pay Tribute to a Sikh man who was killed in the city as part of the racist protests and that really was when the ska music family came together to make a difference. by Lauren Wingenroth - Oct 20, 2014

Though formulaic, Fall for Dance programs, presented each fall at New York City Center with the universal ticket price of $15, tend to succeed in including a diverse set of voices. Program 4 fulfilled this expectation, featuring works by Brian Brooks Moving Company, Tim Harbour, Benjamin Millipied, and Dr. Rennie Harris. The evening was delightfully varied in both the styles danced and the experiences represented. One important exception dampened this program and the festival as a whole--the lack of work by women choreographers, a disappointing but not unusual exclusion. (more...)

by Pat Cerasaro - Oct 20, 2014

Today we are talking to the gifted composer and lyricist behind the earth-shattering score for Broadway's biggest recent hit, HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH, the versatile and passionate Stephen Trask. Shedding considerable light on the development of the idiosyncratic rock musical, Trask discusses his influences and the organic way in which the outre show developed from humble beginnings at downtown bar Squeezebox in the mid-1990s, to Off-Broadway hit at the turn of the new century all the way to the rapturously received feature film adaptation, and, now, the 2014 Broadway production. Trask also details his affection for Tony Award-winning lead actor Neil Patrick Harris and looks ahead to the new leading man donning the titular wig, Andrew Rannells. Additionally, Trask also shares news on the forthcoming sequel to HEDWIG currently being developed with John Cameron Mitchell and teases some of what we can expect from the hotly anticipated theatrical experience. Furthermore, Trask reflects on his own upbringing and musical influences and how that informed the composition of the score for HEDWIG, as well as his own favorite performers. Plus, Trask reflects on his fruitful career as a movie scorer in Hollywood and comments on his upcoming musical endeavors, including two original stage musicals - JUST THE BLACK KEYS, a real-life inspired original musical potentially involving Peter Askin and Michael Mayer, as well 15 MINUTES, a Studio 54-centric period piece written with Rick Elice - as well as much, much more.
