Earth Day has come and gone in 2016, but symphonic orchestra audiences in New York have lots to remember from this year's celebration, with performances of Mahler's DAS LIED VON DER ERDE (SONG OF The Earth). In less than a week, we had two different versions of the piece, with differing pluses and minuses: First, the San Francisco Symphony, under its music director, Michael Tilson Thomas performed the work at Carnegie Hall, then Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic had the home court advantage at Lincoln Center's Geffen Hall. Pacific Symphony to Perform Vivaldi FOUR SEASONS in Concert, 5/19Pacific Symphony to Perform Vivaldi FOUR SEASONS in Concert, 5/19
by BWW News Desk - Apr 23, 2016

Orange County, Calif.—April 21, 2016—Two all-time favorite pieces of music provide a feast for the ears, while stimulating imaginations with their vivid, arresting beauty, when Pacific Symphony performs one of the most beloved works of the Baroque repertoire and then takes a stunning excursion through the Alps. First, Vivaldi's lyrical masterpiece “The Four Seasons,” which paints tantalizing pictures of the changing seasons, is performed and led by award-winning Russian-American violinist Philippe Quint. Revel in the celebration of the autumn harvest, the warmth of the winter fire and the languor of the summer sun as Vivaldi's Venetian tour de force unleashes all of the drama and splendor of the Baroque period and the lyrical beauty of the strings. Then, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, the Symphony retraces the majestic, musical depiction of a dawn-to-dusk hike up and down the Bavarian Alps, as brought to life by Richard Strauss' lush, splendid musical descriptions in his “An Alpine Symphony.”  (more...)

Best-Selling Author Dan Jolley Launches GRAY WIDOW'S WALK, 5/13Best-Selling Author Dan Jolley Launches GRAY WIDOW'S WALK, 5/13
by BWW News Desk - Apr 18, 2016

Best-selling author Dan Jolley will debut his first adult novel, 'Gray Widow's Walk,' on May 13, 2016 from Seventh Star Press. Set in Atlanta, 'Gray Widow's Walk' is the first book of the Gray Widow Trilogy. The cross-genre trilogy, with a mix of science fiction, thriller elements, and dark fantasy, features captivating female protagonist, Janey Sinclair, the masked vigilante dubbed the Gray Widow by the press. As Janey's vigilantism gains worldwide attention, and her showdown with a bloodthirsty shapeshifter draws ever closer, the reason for her augmented abilities - hers and others like her - begins to reveal itself. Because, high above The Earth, other eyes are watching. And they have far-reaching plans... 'Gray Widow's Walk represents an enormous milestone for me,' Dan said. 'It's the first time I've been able to write with zero restrictions. No age considerations, no content parameters or word count limits, just me and whatever story I wanted to tell. Consequently, not only have I been able to create the beginnings of my own fictional universe, full of as much sci-fi and action and suspense as I could manage, but it's also let me address a number of issues that I'm passionate about, not least of which are character diversity and gun control.' Dan Jolley started writing professionally at age nineteen while attending the University of Georgia. Beginning in comic books, he has since branched out into original novels, licensed-property novels, children's books, and video games. His 25-year career includes the young adult sci-fi/espionage trilogy Alex Unlimited; the award-winning comic book mini-series 'Obergeist'; the Eisner Award-nominated comic book mini-series 'JSA: The Liberty Files'; and the Transformers video games 'War for Cybertron' and 'Fall of Cybertron'. Dan served as co-writer of the world-wide-bestselling zombie/parkour game Dying Light, and lead writer of the Oculus Rift game Chronos. He lives in the northwest Georgia foothills with his wife Tracy and a handful of largely inert cats. Dan is available for interviews and appearances. For media appearances, interviews, review copies or book-signing information please email ajudy13@gmail.com. (more...)

BWW Review: First Stage Young Company Presents Stunning, Superb ANTIGONEBWW Review: First Stage Young Company Presents Stunning, Superb ANTIGONE
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Apr 15, 2016

Antigone--an ancient play first written by Sophocles in approximately 400 B.C.--challenges audiences in the 21st century and centers around strong women, political drama, and difficult moral choices necessary for the characters to choose. This classic play dramatically illustrates that over centuries, humanity changes little with modern circumstances. First Stage Young Company tackles this acclaimed tragedy under Joshua Pohja's direction by choosing modern language using a translation from the prestigious French dramatist Jean Anouilh written in 1943. Anouilh often centered his stories on idealistic youth, in this play a young princess, who fights for a divine and personal morality over royal social compromise. Pohja dedicated the production to young Middle Eastern women, similar to Malala who also raised her singular voice against her adversaries even under threat of death. (more...)
