We are lucky in New York City. The talent here is unbelievable. Sometimes you settle in for an intimate evening at a little local club and you get your socks blown off. On Friday the 13th (of May, to be exact), I had such an experience at the latest monthly installment of Stephen Hanks' Metropolitan Room series (Associate Producer, Fr. Jeffrey Hamblin, MD), New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits. The featured performers were Vocalist Laurie Krauz and her Musical Director Daryl Kojak celebrating their 25-year musical collaboration “It's a 'Greatest Hits' show within a Greatest Hits series!” Hanks extolled before introducing his stars for the evening. Jacqulyn Buglisi is honored to stage her 'Table of Silence' on 75 dance majors at the University of California, Santa Barbara, May 23 from 12 noon to 1 PM on the second anniversary of the Isla Vista tragedy, in which six UCSB students were killed.  The commemoration will be an opportunity for the campus community to join together to honor the students lost, in a message of hope, peace and healing. Choreographer Buglisi and UCSB express their deep appreciation to John Arnhold, an alumnus of UCSB and major supporter of the arts, for making this moving event possible.  UCSB musicians will accompany the dancers; the mantels and ceramic plates used in 'Table of Silence', performed annually at New York's Lincoln Center since 2011, will be provided by the New York City-based Buglisi Dance Theatre. One of the most intriguing items on the programme of the International Dance Festival Birmingham 2016 is the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan with Songs of the Wanderers. Founded in 1973 by choreographer Lin Hwai-Win, Cloud Gate was the very first contemporary dance company in the greater Chinese-speaking community. Trained in meditation, ancient breathing exercises, internal martial arts, modern dance, ballet and calligraphy, Cloud Gate has created a discipline that is entirely their own; far removed from the classical traditions of Western dance. BWW Review: PHAETON Takes Flight at Taffety Punk

Director Marcus Kyd has assembled a solid roster of professional actors to give Michael Milligan's mythic drama, composed entirely in iambic pentameter, a grand staging.  On the Globe Theater's stage it was the actor's presence, the actor's gift of language that held the audience rapt with attention.  Kyd's cast understands this, and gives vivid life to every one of Milligan's lines.  (more...)
