Side Show

November 5 - December 15

Music by Henry Krieger

Book and Lyrics by Bill Russell

Directed by Bill Condon

Meant to be Together

Based on the true story of conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton who became stars during the Depression, Side Show is a moving portrait of two women joined at the hip whose extraordinary bondage brings them fame but denies them love. The original 1997 Broadway production of Side Show was directed by Robert Longbottom and received four Tonyģ nominations, including a shared nomination for co-stars Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner, the only time in Tony history where two people were co-nominated for the Best Actress Award.

BWW Blog: Bob Marks - Examine the Lyrics
by Guest Blogger: Bob Marks - Oct 4, 2016

Have you ever heard the expression, "nice house, nobody home?" Often, we use that phrase as a way to describe singers who make pretty sounds, but who fail to capture our imagination on the stage. To be a singer in the theater, it's a very rare performer who can reach out to the auditors or the audience and make them feel something; however, it is the most essential quality a performer can embody if they want to work in this business. BWW Review: THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI Massively Misinterpreted
by Frank Benge - Oct 3, 2016

THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI is a 1941 play by German playwright Bertolt Brecht. Using satire, it tells of the rise of Arturo Ui, a ruthless fictional 1930's Chicago mobster and his takeover of 'the cauliflower racket' by disposing of all who oppose him. It is meant to be an allegory on the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany. The play was written in Helsinki, Finland while Brecht was awaiting entry into the United States after fleeing Germany and was not produced on the stage until 1958. It would be 1961 before it was produced in English. Brecht intended all along that the play was to be produced for the American stage. The play is often compared to the film The Great Dictator (1940), which also featured an absurd parody of Hitler. (more...)

In breaking the mould, this latest season has generated productive debate concerning the purpose and theatrical practice of the Globe, in relation to the use of sound and lighting technology within our theatre spaces.
