Re-Imagined Musical

Side Show

November 5 - December 15

Music by Henry Krieger

Book and Lyrics by Bill Russell

Directed by Bill Condon

Meant to be Together

Based on the true story of conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton who became stars during the Depression, Side Show is a moving portrait of two women joined at the hip whose extraordinary bondage brings them fame but denies them love. The original 1997 Broadway production of Side Show was directed by Robert Longbottom and received four Tonyģ nominations, including a shared nomination for co-stars Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner, the only time in Tony history where two people were co-nominated for the Best Actress Award.

BWW Blog: Bob Marks - Your Performance Goals in the Context of Your Lifestyle
by Guest Blogger: Bob Marks - Jul 15, 2016

As one of the pianists for the original Broadway production of Annie, many of my voice teacher colleagues were horrified at the thought of little girls being asked to belt out songs such as 'Tomorrow' and 'Hard Knock Life.' And yet, many of these teachers refused to accept those young girls as students! At that time, many voice teachers would not agree to teach students who had unchanged, prepubescent voices. They were under the impression that voice lessons could permanently damage a child's voice, which remained a widely accepted belief for many years.  (more...)

BWW Blog: Allison Rambler - Come Look At The Freaks: The World They Live In
by Guest Blogger: Allison Rambler - Jul 11, 2016

Another week of Side Show rehearsals has almost come to an end, and many different aspects of the show are beginning to fall into place. Perhaps the most noticeable of these developments is the set. Each day I've walked into the black box studio for rehearsal, the "Side Show tent" has been coming together piece by piece. We are finally able to block scenes with a more accurate estimate of where each person will actually be able to stand, and seeing the new additions each day seems to inspire the cast to bring even more effort to rehearsal. Seeing the construction of the set has always been one of my favorite parts of any show, as it is visual proof of the progress being made. As the set acquires detail after detail, it helps me to imagine what the finished product will be, and I start to look forward to that ever-elusive opening night with renewed excitement.  (more...)

BWW Blog: Bob Marks - Building Your Book of Audition Songs
by Guest Blogger: Bob Marks - Aug 23, 2016

Even when an audition provides specific music to be prepared, you might be asked to 'bring your book.' Every performer requires a collection of songs that are ready to be sung at a moment's notice. In our industry, your 'book' is a physical binder that holds all of these songs, and is also the term for this repertoire of pieces that you have mastered and can perform with little or no preparation. BWW Blog: Allison Rambler - Come Look At the Freaks: Who They Are
by Allison Rambler - Aug 10, 2016

As the opening night of The Belmont Theater's 'Side Show' quickly approaches, the activity in the black box studio has increased ten-fold. The set is becoming more elaborate, the swell of music from the orchestra now fills the air, and the costumes are coming together piece by piece. Tech week has begun, and it can both an exciting and somewhat stressful time for any production. As an actor, it can sometimes be difficult to lose sight of your character and even the meaning behind the show itself among the bustle and flurry of tech week. That is why I felt that the time had come to interview some of the actors in our show, in order to provide a bit of insight into their characters and to explain from their perspective the importance of a musical such as 'Side Show.' And for Nik Olson, this was no small task. (more...)
