Exclusive: Moments in the Woods- Inside the INTO THE WOODS Original Cast Reunion at BAMExclusive: Moments in the Woods- Inside the INTO THE WOODS Original Cast Reunion at BAM
by Randy Rainbow - Jun 29, 2015

Can you believe it's been almost 28 years since the original production of Into the Woods opened on Broadway? Seems like only yesterday my mother was dragging a 6-year-old me, literally kicking and screaming, from below the marquee of the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld) to the Winter Garden Theatre where Cats was playing. (I wanted desperately to see Into the Woods, but a family 'friend' told my parents that Cats would be more appropriate for my age group. Thanks for ruining my life, lady.) In the right light, you can still to this day see my claw marks scraped along 45th Street. (more...)

BWW Reviews: LES MISERABLES at Casa MananaBWW Reviews: LES MISERABLES at Casa Manana
by Kyle West - Jun 25, 2015

My first experience with LES MISERABLES was in 1996, as a tween performing in my school's musical review. While most other kids learned the material and moved on, I saved my pennies for the cast recording, memorizing the show word-for-word. After moving to New York in 2004, my work provided me with virtually unlimited tickets to the city's hottest shows. By the time LES MISERABLES returned to Broadway (in 2006, with a carbon-copy revival of the original production that had closed three years previously), I was a jaded New York twenty-something, no longer inspired by the 'tourist trap' hits. Then, as I sat in the darkened Broadhurst Theatre, the turntable moved, and I realized I was watching an unparalleled piece of theatre history. (more...)

BWW Reviews: WICKED at Paramount a Bit Flat but Still WickedBWW Reviews: WICKED at Paramount a Bit Flat but Still Wicked
by Jay Irwin - Jul 10, 2015

I don't think many theater Nerds need to argue the virtues of Stephen Schwartz's hit show "Wicked" currently playing at the Paramount Theatre. It's one of those shows that's widely and verbally loved by aficionados and general theatergoers alike. So when the tour comes through town it's bound to have the rich and powerful voices needed to blast those wonderful songs into the rafters. And this tour is no exception. But while this tour also boasts two wonderful leads who also manage some brilliant and layered storytelling in their characters, some of the supporting players felt lacking and flat in that aspect making this go around with the show not as awe-inspiring as past viewings. BWW Reviews: Monomoy's SPELLING BEE Spells Success!BWW Reviews: Monomoy's SPELLING BEE Spells Success!
by Kristen Morale - Aug 10, 2015

What would happen if one were to switch the first few letters of "amazing" to form a new, exciting word that only certain minds could quickly figure out? Actually, who cares! As long as each of you knows the word's definition and what it implies, there can only be synonyms of the word used to describe Monomoy Theatre's current production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Having never before seen a production of this rather well-known comedy of a musical, letting Monomoy give me a very impressive and lasting first impression was a wonderful was an absolute privilege; I didn't expect anything less from the group, as the amount of talent on stage makes every play and musical performed wonderful, to say the least. Spelling Bee is really something quite special, as such a simple idea for a plot is taken and transformed, through music and rather peculiar characters, into something that will keep audiences laughing for an evening; it is a production that will not have anyone spelling "regret."
