In a staging by Karen Kohlhaas reminiscent of the carnal exorbitance of carnivale's heyday, featuring a cast of characters pulled straight from the murky depths of the human psyche. Carnival is a hilarious, bizarre, and poignant story of the meaning of death, of dying with dignity, and the ancient dilemma of living for a life after death. Iconic stage and screen actress and Academy Award nominee Kathleen Turner returns to Arena Stage following her sold-out run of Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins to make her professional singing debut as the tough-as-nails matriarch Mother Courage-a single mother determined to keep her family alive and her business afloat during war. Using the David Hare translation, the show fuses politics and satire to paint an unforgettable and provocative portrait of war, incorporating more than 10 pieces of original music composed in a rollicking, gypsy-punk style and performed by cast members doubling as musicians. Joseph V. Melillo, executive producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, today announced programming for the 2012 Next Wave Festival, in its 30th year. The festival runs from September 5 to January 19 and comprises dance, theater, music, music-theater, nouveau cirque, film, and multimedia events. This season, BAM presents its first engagements at the new BAM Richard B. Fisher Building. The Fishman Space, a flexible 250-seat venue, will be showcased in various configurations with 15 diverse productions. The Next Wave Festival also features BAMcafé Live weekend music events, BAMcinématek programs, visual art exhibitions, artist talks, and literary events. (more...)

The American Theatre Wing has announced the recipients of the 2010 Jonathan Larson® Grants. The grants, given annually to honor emerging composers, lyricists and book writers, help to continue Tony Award®-winning composer Jonathan Larson's dream of infusing musical theatre with a contemporary, joyful, urban vitality. After considering 165 applications, Peter Lerman, Daniel Mate, and songwriting team Michael Kooman (music) and Christopher Dimond (book & lyrics) were selected to receive the prestigious grants, totaling $10,000.
