Roundabout Theatre Company presented its annual 2015 Spring Gala 'There is Nothing Like a Dame' last night, March 2, 2015 in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria (301 Park Avenue, NYC). The evening was a celebration of Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe winner Helen Mirren, who was presented with The Jason Robards Award for Excellence in Theatre. The tribute featured appearances by Jennifer Garner & Alessandro Nivola and performances by Laura Benanti,Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Santino Fontana, Victor Garber, Donna Murphy, Kelli O'Hara, Alessandro Nivola,Laura Osnes and Betsy Wolfe. Together with The Clarion Theatre, they'll present six plays beginning on May 6th, 2015, with a company of actors performing in repertory. All of the plays focus on historical figures, including Laurette Taylor, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Rosemary Kennedy, Tennessee Williams, Gertrude Stein, Lillian Hellman and more. WFUV's popular program, Ceol na nGael ('Music of the Irish'), heard Sundays from 12-4 p.m., celebrated its 40th anniversary with a concert on February 8 at Ross Hall at the New York Botanical Garden. The concert, featuring performances by fiddler Eileen Ivers, singer Cathie Ryan, seven-piece band Celtic Cross, and Dan Gurney, accordion player of The Yanks, will be broadcast on Sunday, March 15 from 2-4 p.m. at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org, where it will also be available on demand in the audio archives. Penn High School sure brought those dancing feet in their performance of '42nd Street'! After two cancelations, and a lot of cold weather, The Penn High School Theater Department finally opened their 2015 Spring Musical, '42nd Street' on Saturday February 21st. Even with the diversity and challenges faced during the week, this cast brought it all and gave one of the best performances I've ever seen at a high school level. Sitting in the audience, I got chills as I saw each and every performer on stage give it their all and perform the best show they could. (more...)
