BWW Review: THE TURQUOISE ELEPHANT Trumpets the Absurdities of Now at Griffin Theatre

There is little on this planet more absurd than the way we, the human race, treat it; nonetheless the final offering of Griffin Theatre mainstage for the year comes pretty close. The Turquoise Elephant extrapolates the bizarre misconduct of modern society for a pre-apocalyptic glimpse into the life of a rich and powerful family as they in each their own fashion do their part to destroy the world. In its symbolism, Stephen Carleton's text weaves fantastic, but not unrealistic, circumstance with director Gale Edwards' Luhrmannian technicolour styling for quite the nihilistic spectacle. There is certainly something worthwhile about theater that pushes boundaries, tries new things, experiments and offers unique way to tell a story. The art form, in general, benefit from that kind of work. It benefits from work that expands the minds of an audience and tells them a story in a way that challenges them. On the other hand, Wilbury Group's second show of the year, 10,000 Things by Erik Ehn, proves how this kind of theater can instead leave an audience bored, confused or both.  (more...)

Be More Chill was first produced at Two River Theatre in New Jersey, where it was given its world premiere. Inis Nua Theatre Revives Dublin by LAMPLIGHT by Michael West from November 9-20, 2016

Inis Nua Theatre Company will team up with Drexel University's Mandell Professionals in Residence Project (MPiRP) to present a revival of Dublin by Lamplight by Michael West. Inis Nua's breakout hit from 2011 will be remounted with some familiar names, a grand two-level stage, and the talents of co-op students working side-by-side with the professional actors. Using commedia dell'arte make-up stylings and Storytellers theatre, the cast of six will portray 40 different characters in the fast-paced tale about the launch of the Irish National Theatre. Dublin by Lamplight runs November 9 to 20th at Drexel's Mandell Theater (3201 Chestnut Street). (more...)

Anna K. Jacobs Selected for 2016 Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award

The Ziegfeld Club has announced that Anna K. Jacobs has been selected to receive the 2016 Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award. The award will provide Jacobs with a grant of $10,000 and a year of professional mentorship from mentors including Tony Award-winning producer Barbara Whitman. Zoe Sarnak and Shaina Taub are the honorable mentions chosen by the awards panel. Recipients will be honored during a reception that will feature distinguished speaker Jeanine Tesori and a special musical performance by Masi Asare, who is the recipient of last year's inaugural award, on Monday, November 7, at the New Amsterdam Theatre. English Touring Theatre Announces Casting Update for SILVER LINING

English Touring Theatre today announces a casting update for the world premiere of Sandi Toksvig's new comedy Silver Lining, a co-production with Rose Theatre Kingston. Sheila Reid plays Gloria, with Rachel Davies as Maureen, Keziah Joseph as Hope, Maggie McCarthy as May, Joanna Munro as June and Amanda Walker as St Michael in the production directed by Rebecca Gatward.
