Saturday Night on Broadway!: A Hilarious History of SNL and The Great White Way
by Alexa Criscitiello - Oct 8, 2016

There is a belief among those in the public eye that you can't say you've truly 'made it' until Saturday Night Live has spoofed you. As evidenced by the show's long and well-documented history of pop-cultural and political satire, it is evident that no one is safe from SNL's finely tuned eye for current events and cultural happenings. BWW Review: THE BOYS IN THE BAND, Park Theatre, 2 October 2016
by Marianka Swain - Oct 5, 2016

When Mart Crowley's The Boys in the Band premiered Off Broadway in 1968, a year before the Stonewall Riots, it was groundbreaking in its depiction of a community of gay men. The work - later adapted into a film - has since fallen in and out of favour, its frank emphasis on self-loathing and catty, camp one-liners at odds with some positive image-focussed equal rights campaigners. BWW Recap: Liza's Livin' in a Marshmallow World, & More, on YOUNGER
by Matt Smith - Oct 5, 2016

As the familiar song goes, it's a marshmallow world in the winter, but it seems like winter's come early for Liza, who's all about the sticky s'mores snack this week, using it to prove a point to her boyfriend about temptation, gratification and happiness (don't you just love when she impresses us with her 40-year-old psychology knowledge?). Of course, that's when she's not involved in her crazy 26-year-old antics, like trying to prevent Kelsey from opening her laptop, lest her secret be blown, or attempting to talk to Charles and figuring out their relationship. Looks like this web is as sticky as the marshmallows!! It's all ahead (or behind, depending on if you've seen the episode or not!) on this week's recap, so if you're intrigued… please, read on:  (more...)

Paul Capsis to Star in New Australian Production of CABARET
by BWW News Desk - Oct 4, 2016

Winner of 12 Tony Awards, 8 Academy Awards and 7 BAFTA Awards, CABARET wows audiences and critics alike time and time again sky-rocketing the careers its starts.  Fifty years ago in 1966 the original Broadway production made a household name of Joel Grey who shook audiences as The Emcee.  Two years later an unassuming Judi Dench stole the show as Sally Bowles on London's West End.  Arguably the most iconic movie musical of all time made a star of Liza Minnelli when she brought Sally Bowles to the silver screen directed by Bob Fosse. BWW Review: Cabaret Celebrates Sylvia Syms on Night Three of the Mabel Mercer Foundation Cabaret Convention
by Casey Mink - Oct 23, 2016

On the penultimate night of the 2016 Cabaret Convention, presented by the Mabel Mercer Foundation, 11 fantastic cabaret artists---those who are celebrated in the form as well as those who are emerging alike---assembled to salute the late and legendary Sylvia Syms. The evening, hosted by one of Syms' closest confidants, the critic Rex Reed, was brassy, delivered wonderful anecdotes, and was ultimately very moving musically, much like Syms herself. A black and white photograph of Syms, accurately capturing her maternal warmth, hung high inside the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center throughout the evening, which was formatted in two distinct segments. Act One was comprised of each performer taking to the stage alone to sing one of Syms' lesser known cabaret staples, or the songs which she "rescued" from obscurity such as those cut from golden age musicals. Act Two saw the performers again take on a Syms staple, but those which were more well-known hits and standards, displaying the full range of Syms' nightclub chops. (more...)

BWW Recap: Krysta Rodriguez, Jennifer Simard Guest on YOUNGER as Liza Saves a Bookstore
by Matt Smith - Oct 12, 2016

Liza's got it all in for herself in this week's installment (and yes, I know I say that every week, but with this show and her predicament, would you really expect anything less?) After settling everything by 'roasting marshmallows' with Josh, Liza gives him a break this week (once again, to contemplate their relationship) but also to head back to New Jersey once again. And no, she's not pickin' up any truffle butter this time 'round; she's going to cash in on a brilliant idea to save a bookstore… with less than favorable results. (Okay, yes, I know I say that every week, too, but seriously.. come on! Have you seen the show?!) Meanwhile, Kelsey heads back into the dating scene, Lauren ends up in a dating dilemma… and somewhere in there, Diana passes out. It's all ahead (or behind), so if you're intrigued…. read on, read on!! (more...)

by Remy Holzer - Oct 10, 2016

I once fell in love with an album cover: Barbra Streisand, dressed in the height of granny chic, in a straw hat, drapey black cardigan and maxi skirt, and men's-style oxfords with rakish white socks...a desolate stage littered with sheet music...a rich burgundy-and-black color scheme. I first discovered Sondheim through that 1985 record, 'The Broadway Album,' and I still can't hear 'Pretty Women' without thinking of Streisand's sinuous interpretation. The talent who first burst forth onstage in 1962 in 'I Can Get It for You Wholesale'; who made a hilarious, touching 'Funny Girl' her signature role; who tackled 'A Star Is Born' in its third film incarnation-and who has stayed mostly in the spotlight professionally and mostly out of it personally over the last 54 years-has mellowed, but her voice is still completely unique, and her fans (old and new) still utterly devoted. Her political activism has become part of her shtick, and her recent live performance of a 'Send in the Clowns' parody mocking Donald Trump has become a popular clip online. She is, for lack of a less battered word, an icon, and fans thrilled to see her-as always, dressed for the occasion-hand the Tony for Best Musical to 'Hamilton' this year. (more...)
