BWW Recap: Zeek (and Others) Make Major Decisions on PARENTHOODBWW Recap: Zeek (and Others) Make Major Decisions on PARENTHOOD
by Matt Smith - Oct 3, 2014

We open where we left off last week: Sarah stares at Amber and, after a moment, asks her if she's keeping the baby. Amber's answer? Yes. Well, there goes that spoiler. Now, I guess it's just more time to plan the shower. Julia's in bed with Mr. Jeffries (or so he was called last week), and Joel calls in with important news: Sydney's being bullied in school. While this is a serious topic, I was more intrigued by HOW they were talking to each other. They're surprisingly easy breezy while they converse, which could be foreshadowing of a later reconciliation (there I go again!), but then again, Mr. Jeffries is still lying in Julia's bed, and she fails to mention to Joel (she even lies about where she is when she initially picks up the phone). This could get interesting. (more...)

BWW Recap: Zeek Heads into Surgery on PARENTHOODBWW Recap: Zeek Heads into Surgery on PARENTHOOD
by Matt Smith - Oct 10, 2014

The episode begins with Zeek and Camille talking about the surgery — “The room's got a view” says Camille; “We can watch the squirrels fornicate” mutters Zeek — before the family stops by to wish him luck and offer hugs and words of strength and support. Zeek reassures them there's a 96% success rate, before spilling the beans to the whole family about Amber's pregnancy (before, only he and Sarah knew). Oops. Well, there goes that storyline too. Funny how these big buildups compare to the actual reveal. (more...)

MUST READ! Bill Gates Opening Address of 2013 Microsoft Research Faculty SummitMUST READ! Bill Gates Opening Address of 2013 Microsoft Research Faculty Summit
by BWW News Desk - Jul 29, 2013

BILL GATES: Well, good morning. It's great to be here. I haven't been here for over five years so it's great to see the way this event has grown. And I think it's fair to say that we're in a golden age of computer science. The original vision of Microsoft that we had a dream about what software could do if we had infinite computing and infinite storage; that almost is our reality today. And so it's amazing for me to see how that's being applied, whether it's user interface, with vision, speech, pen, with modeling in rich data areas with machine learning. And it really seems like that idea, the powerful assistant that can help us get things done, help us drive deep insights, that the progress we'll make in the next 5 years and 10 years will be really unbelievable. Even our friends in the hardware industry are giving us better screens, better sensors, things that let us exercise the magic of software. And for Microsoft, that means taking something like Office and going from documents to deep insights, taking something like search and going from links to answers to task solutions. So software, you know, has only achieved a very small portion of what we want it to do and even you could say what we need it to do. If you look at things like climate modeling, energy innovation, so much that this field has to contribute to solving broad science problems. I thought just as a kickoff, I'd give you four examples of things that I work on at the foundation before we go on to the Q&A, and really highlight how in each of those areas it's software and digital approaches that are letting us be very ambitious. BWW Interviews: Aaron Alon, Justin Doran, and Brad Goertz talk BULLY, A NEW MUSICAL and its Concept Cast AlbumBWW Interviews: Aaron Alon, Justin Doran, and Brad Goertz talk BULLY, A NEW MUSICAL and its Concept Cast Album
by David Clarke - Jul 27, 2013

In recent American culture, bullying has reached new heights and gained a lot of power. It seems like the word and programs implemented to stop bullying are inescapable. Sadly, it also seems that these prevention programs are largely ineffective. In Houston, Texas, a skilled group of talented professionals are embarking on a creative venture that may or may not answer some questions we all have about bullying. BULLY, A NEW MUSICAL, conceived as a film, has a score, lyrics, and book written by Aaron Alon. The goal of the project is to get people talking in hopes that those conversations will be reparative, meaningful, impactful, healing, and begin to reexamine and even create new solutions to the problem of bullying. Recently, I sat down with writer Aaron Alon, director Justin Doran, and actor/singer Brad Goertz, and discussed this new musical film in the making and its upcoming Concept Cast Recording. (more...)

BWW Recap: Jay (and Phil and Luke) Suffer Separation Anxiety on MODERN FAMILYBWW Recap: Jay (and Phil and Luke) Suffer Separation Anxiety on MODERN FAMILY
by Matt Smith - Feb 5, 2015

Hey, all. Hope you enjoyed your short, mid-winter hiatus, and now the TV gods have rewarded our suffering by giving us a full month of new episodes! That's right, new episodes — one every week this month! Let the rejoicing begin! Here we go with the first one up: After Gloria (and the allergist) suspects Joe's allergic to Stella, she's sent away to live with Mitch and Cam for a week, much to Jay's chagrin. He's overly attached to the dog, and feels like he's lost her to Cam. (Some fantastic one-liners in their conversation while Cam's at the dog park, though they may not have had to do with the dog — haha!) Jay tries to win her back in several ways, one being the check-up in the aforementioned phone call, the other being a particularly hilarious scene where he cooks his baby a steak dinner — “You don't know what I'm competing with over there,. Cameron's wooing her with belly rubs, jewelry, kisses on the mouth…” See, I know Jay's over-affection for the dog (especially over his family) may seem a bit — nay, a lot — irrational, but Ed O'Neill plays this irrationality so well that you laugh at what he says rather than reprimand what he does. The great fear of realizing that MOTHERHOOD OUT LOUD is a series of vignettes which look at varying phases of motherhood, is that it will turn out to be a Hallmark sentimental mindless experience. Fear not. The eighteen authors of the vignettes avoid making the experience sappy and purely entertaining. Instead, there is a balance of humor, pathos, and social commentary. (more...)
