Kyla Garcia's THE MERMAID WHO LEARNED HOW TO FLY Swims to NYC for United Solo TonightKyla Garcia's THE MERMAID WHO LEARNED HOW TO FLY Swims to NYC for United Solo Tonight
by BWW News Desk - Nov 18, 2015

Kyla Garcia is the epitome of the experienced actor. She has performed off-Broadway, at the Globe in London, locally at Boston Court and the Lewis Family Playhouse, in several indie films, digital works, and most recently as 'Mrs. Zeller' in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Last summer, she took on a whole new (and deeply personal) challenge by debuting her solo show THE MERMAID WHO LEARNED HOW TO FLY at the Elephant at the 2014 Hollywood Fringe Festival. (more...)

by Remy Block - Nov 16, 2015

Eric Yves Garcia has stepped away from the piano. I repeat, stepped away from the piano. The performer strides into the center stage light, his dark eyes twinkling, his jaw defined by just the right amount of stubble. This guy could be a movie star. I was excited. For the Metropolitan Room audience, Garcia's November 5 opening night of his new show Pour Spirits was about to be a down and dirty tell-all of some of New York's bacchanalian carousers as related by the handsome, attentive piano man of Chez Josephine, Bemelmans Bar, and other NYC nightspots. Garcia remained center stage for the better part of the show, allowing his inner storyteller and actor to take the reins, punctuating his alcohol-soaked dispatches from the wrong side of midnight with songs far afield of the traditional American Songbook. BWW Review: ONCE Enchants New HavenBWW Review: ONCE Enchants New Haven
by Lindsey Sullivan - Jan 29, 2016

Guy meets girl. They make some music. And they either end up together or apart, delighting or devastating their respective audiences. It's just as typical a story as the romance of the Broadway musical (and usually has a similar effect). Well, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's Once is hailed for dashing the typical boy meets girl tale, and its North American tour installment does not seem to do typical either. Magic was made at New Haven's Shubert Theatre last night as the cast of Once took their first bow of the weekend (and received the first of what are likely to become many standing ovations). Clare Barron's I'LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN to Run 2/24-3/19 at Bushwick StarrClare Barron's I'LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN to Run 2/24-3/19 at Bushwick Starr
by BWW News Desk - Jan 19, 2016

The Bushwick Starr is proud to present Obie Award-winning playwright Clare Barron's newest work, the world premiere of I'LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN (a chamber piece), part concert and part archaeological dig about First Love, first heartbreak, and how those formative teenage experiences haunt the rest of our lives. I'LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN is created from Barron's actual teenage diary and performed by a chorus of downtown's finest. We track the emotional ups-and-downs of 'Clare' as she goes through her very first relationship. It's a chance to spend some time in a real-life teenage brain and with real-life teenage artifacts (drawings from Clare's journals, the actual purple iridescent choir robes from her high school, her baby teeth...) but the goal is to jog the audience's memories and inspire their own personal reflection. Do you remember your first cup of coffee? Or how intense it was the first time you took your pants off with someone? Or all the things you promised yourself before you got distracted by the Adult World?   (more...)

Set at the turn of the nineteenth century, 'The Improbable Wonders of Moojie Littleman' is a heartrending, coming-of-age story, with a dose of humor and magical realism. After his adoptive mother dies in a freak accident, eight year-old, disabled, bi-racial Moojie is sent by his disapproving father to live at St. Isidore's Fainting Goat Dairy, where he befriends a clan of outcasts from an alternate universe. Six years later, this forbidden friendship and subsequent events reveal an extraordinary boy's tale of loss and connection, First Love, and self-discovery. 'The Improbable Wonders of Moojie Littleman' is available in both print and ebook formats. The Bridges of Madison County was a hit film in 1995 for Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. The 2014 Broadway musical version with a gorgeous operatic score by Jason Robert Brown and stellar book by Marsha Norman is now playing at the Ahmanson downtown through January 17. When you look closely, there's so much to praise that it makes no sense whatsoever that the show closed early on Broadway and won only one Tony for Brown's music.
