August Strindberg Repertory Theatre (www.strindberg.org), which was formed in 2012 to illuminate Strindberg's plays for today's American audiences, will present the English language premiere of Strindberg's 'Mr. Bengt's Wife' (1882), directed by Craig Baldwin (Associate Artistic Director of Red Bull Theater) September 6 to 29, 2013 at the Gene Frankel Theatre, 24 Bond Street, where August Strindberg Rep is the resident company. 'Mr. Bengt's Wife' has been characterized as Strindberg's answer to Ibsen's 'The Doll's House.' It utilizes realism, expressionism, melodrama and dreamscape to tell the story of the rebellious Margit, whose quest to become an independent New Woman catapults her from a convent to a castle, where her husband and two lovers vie for her attention. Patti LuPone steps back into the role that led to her 1985 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical as Moll in The Cradle Will Rock on Monday, May 19, 7pm at Broadway's Bernard Jacobs Theatre, 242 West 45th Street. The concert staging of Marc Blitzstein's iconic work will benefit The Acting Company, co-founded by John Houseman, Cradle's original producer in 1937, who directed Ms. LuPone and a cast of Acting Company Alumni in a revival almost 50 years later. Lonny Price (Lincoln Center's Sweeney Todd and Company) will direct; Michael Barrett (Caramoor, NY Festival of Song) will again serve as musical director and play the score as he did in the 1980's production. August Strindberg Rep to Present TO DAMASCUS, PART 1, 4/18-5/11

August Strindberg's 'To Damascus, Part 1' will be adapted to Harlem, 1962 in the next production of August Strindberg Repertory Theatre (www.strindberg.org). The play will be presented with a multi-racial cast April 18 to May 11 at the Gene Frankel Theatre, 24 Bond Street (East Village). It is the first part of a trilogy (called 'The Road to Damascus' in earlier translations) that has been described as 'Strindberg's most complex plays' and as 'his greatest plays,' due to their synthesis of a wide variety of myths, symbols and ideas with a profound spiritual analysis in a new dramatic form. August Strindberg Rep will present Part 2 in March, 2015 and Part 3 in 2016. It will be the first time the trilogy will have been presented complete in any language in 99 years. (more...)

HANAFUDI DENKI - THE Dance of Death is high-voltage Japanese underground musical based on Threepenny Opera, set in a funeral parlor in Tokyo during World War I. In it, a dead girl who loves a living boy adventures between two worlds - the dead and the living. The play's creator, Shuji Terayama once said, "Humans are incomplete cadavers", and this work is heavily tinged with this sentiment. It's a thought-provoking meditation on how we view death and life. A bomb goes off in New York City. The course of nine lives and a nation are irrevocably changed. Sifting through the pieces of the past and the future, Somewhere Safer's provocative story examines questions of polarization, citizenship and idealism in modern America. This fast paced and fiercely intelligent play was the inaugural recipient of Square One development with On the Square Productions and was twice featured as part of the company's Write Angle Reading Series. It was also a finalist for the 2012 Old Vic/New Voices Playwrights' Exchange, and featured in Flux Theatre Ensemble's 2013 Have Another series. August Strindberg Repertory Theatre (www.strindberg.org), which was formed in 2012 to illuminate Strindberg's plays for today's American audiences, will present the English language premiere of Strindberg's 'Mr. Bengt's Wife' (1882), directed by Craig Baldwin (Associate Artistic Director of Red Bull Theater) September 13 to 29, 2013 at the Gene Frankel Theatre, 24 Bond Street, where August Strindberg Rep is the resident company. 'Mr. Bengt's Wife' has been characterized as Strindberg's answer to Ibsen's 'The Doll's House.' It utilizes realism, expressionism, melodrama and dreamscape to tell the story of the rebellious Margit, whose quest to become an independent New Woman catapults her from a convent to a castle, where her husband and two lovers vie for her attention.
