Moscow, 1938. A dangerous place to have a sense of humour; even more so a sense of freedom. Mikhail Bulgakov, living among dissidents, stalked by secret police, has both. And then he’s offered a poisoned chalice: a commission to write a play about Stalin to celebrate his sixtieth birthday.

Inspired by historical fact, Collaborators embarks on a surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship with the omnipotent subject of his drama.

Killing my enemies is easy. The challenge is to change the way they think, to control their minds. And I think I controlled yours pretty well. In years to come, I’ll be able to say: Bulgakov? Yeah, we even trained him. He gave up. He saw the light. We broke him, we can break anybody. It’s man versus monster, Mikhail. And the monster always wins.

John Hodge’s blistering new play depicts a lethal game of cat and mouse through which the appalling compromises and humiliations inflicted on any artist by those with power are held up to scrutiny.

Following its successful run in the Cottesloe Theatre, Collaborators is transferring to the Olivier Theatre on April 30 for a limited run.

Just last night, Broadway's biggest voices took to the 54 Below stage to sing the iconic rock hits of Grammy-award winning composer Jim Steinman. Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012, Steinman has sold more than 190 million records as the composer and lyricist behind such hit songs as 'It's All Coming Back To Me Now,' 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That),' 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light, ' and 'Holding Out For A Hero.' In 1983, he became the only artist in music history to have written and produced the simultaneous #1 and #2 song on the Billboard charts when 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' and 'Making Love Out Of Nothing At All' held the top two spots on the Hot 100 for three weeks. by BWW News Desk - May 22, 2015

The Marsh has announced award-winning actor/playwright Geoff Hoyle's newest solo show Lear's Shadow will extend, with continuing performances through June 27. Lear's Shadow, written in collaboration with and directed by the master of the solo form David Ford, will run Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8pm and Saturdays at 5pm through May 30. Beginning June 4, Lear's Shadow will be performed Thursdays at 8pm and Saturdays at 5pm at The Marsh (1062 Valencia Street, San Francisco).  For tickets ($20-$100), the public may visit www.themarsh.org or call 415-282-3055 between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. by Alix Cohen - May 18, 2015

Three of Cy Coleman's Broadway leading ladies invite you to a celebratory shindig buoyed by talent, palpably warmed by affection. Sometimes orchestrated as a harmonizing girl group and at others in distinctively different solo turns, Lillias White, Cady Huffman, and Randy Graff offer a banquet of Coleman's oeuvre in the 54 Below revue, My Guy Cy, which opened Friday night (and played again the following night). Arrangements by various musicians are texturally piquant, showcasing uncommon skill when interweaving songs. Direction (from vocalist Will Nunziata, who has a second flowering career) is fluid, deft, and winning. (more...)

by Joseph Baker - May 11, 2015

For its spring musical, Playhouse on the Square has reached several decades back and produced -- not an 'old warhorse of a musical' (sorry, Rodgers and Hammerstein) -- but a true thoroughbred, Cole Porter's sparkling, innovative (at the time) KISS ME, KATE. Just as Shakespeare himself created enduring plays by utilizing the best plots and characters of other works, so did Porter and his Collaborators, Bella and Samuel Spewack -- they went right to the Bard himself, and in building their own superb entertainment around the rollicking THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, they created such a witty, enjoyable romp that would cause even the immortal Shakespeare to set aside his pen, smile, and snap his garters.
