Moscow, 1938. A dangerous place to have a sense of humour; even more so a sense of freedom. Mikhail Bulgakov, living among dissidents, stalked by secret police, has both. And then he’s offered a poisoned chalice: a commission to write a play about Stalin to celebrate his sixtieth birthday.

Inspired by historical fact, Collaborators embarks on a surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship with the omnipotent subject of his drama.

Killing my enemies is easy. The challenge is to change the way they think, to control their minds. And I think I controlled yours pretty well. In years to come, I’ll be able to say: Bulgakov? Yeah, we even trained him. He gave up. He saw the light. We broke him, we can break anybody. It’s man versus monster, Mikhail. And the monster always wins.

John Hodge’s blistering new play depicts a lethal game of cat and mouse through which the appalling compromises and humiliations inflicted on any artist by those with power are held up to scrutiny.

Following its successful run in the Cottesloe Theatre, Collaborators is transferring to the Olivier Theatre on April 30 for a limited run.

The Houston Grand Opera Announces 60th Anniversary Season, Featuring World Premiere of A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Iain Bell and More
by BWW News Desk - Aug 27, 2014

Houston Grand Opera's 2014–15 season, the company's 60th anniversary season, includes the world premiere of A Christmas Carol by Iain Bell—the company's 55th new commission —from award-winning Dickens authority Simon Callow; the continuation of HGO's first Ring cycle, with the American premiere of La Fura dels Baus's groundbreaking take on Die Walküre; the American premieres of Sir Nicholas Hytner's The Magic Flute and Lee Blakeley's Sweeney Todd; a 60th Anniversary Gala Concert featuring mezzo-soprano (and HGO Studio alumna) Joyce DiDonato; and a host of career-shaping role debuts that speak to Patrick Summers's gift for casting. Together with the company's first presentation of John Cox'sOtello, and the returns of Göran Järvefelt's beloved Così fan tutte and Michael Grandage's hit staging of Madame Butterfly, these rich offerings serve once again to illustrate some of the ways that HGO—still the only opera company with two Grammys, two Emmys, and a Tony—epitomizes “one model of what a forward-looking opera company could be” (Greg Sandow, Arts Journal). Vaxxas Selected as World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer 2015
by BWW News Desk - Aug 26, 2014

Vaxxas is developing the Nanopatch, a novel vaccine delivery platform designed to enable more efficient, effective, and safer vaccination than needle and syringe. The Nanopatch achieves these benefits by directly targeting delivery of vaccine components to the abundant immunological cells immediately below the surface of the skin, resulting in robust immune system activation at much lower doses than required by needle injection. Vaccines delivered by the Nanopatch platform have the potential to provide vastly improved immune protection at significantly lower cost. Furthermore, when vaccines are dry-coated onto the proprietary Nanopatch, they have thermostable properties, which means that the billions of dollars needed to maintain the cold-chain may someday be reinvested toward more pressing priorities in global health systems. Vaxxas is pursuing strategic plans to both license its technology to global pharmaceutical companies as well as advance vaccine candidates on its own. (more...)

You Can't Take It With You: Designer Statements
by Roundabout Theatre Company - Aug 25, 2014

Central to the comic plot of You Can't Take It with You are the eccentricities of the Sycamore family. The entire three-act play takes place in the house where this extended family lives in upper Manhattan. We wanted the audience to get the sense that this family doesn't quite conform to their surroundings from the moment they enter the theater, so, rather than a standard show curtain, they see the front porch of a fully three dimensional, faintly Victorian, turn-of-the-century house, flanked on each side by renderings of two relatively modern apartment buildings from the 1930s. Inspired by architectural 'holdouts' that are sprinkled throughout New York City, this image creates a stark contrast between the Sycamore house and the prevailing aesthetic of the rest of the neighborhood -- playfully hinting at the quirky family that the audience is about to meet.
