by Dylan Siegman - Feb 26, 2015

As a team, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz (Larry) Hart found Broadway fame while in their twenties. Though their talents as composer and lyricist complimented one another brilliantly, their working methods and personalities couldn't have been more different. Rodgers's strict work ethic and Hart's casual and tragically self-destructive attitude eventually led to the end of their creative partnership which, in turn, resulted in Rodgers's legendary collaborations with Oscar Hammerstein. After seeing Bayou Concert City Musicals' production of their latest revue, My Romance: The Rodgers and Hart Songbook, I was inspired to not only revisit the songs that were performed, but to delve further into the career of one of Broadway's greatest, if somewhat tumultuous partnerships. Pacific Symphony to Offer World Premiere Violin Concerto Performance, 3/12Pacific Symphony to Offer World Premiere Violin Concerto Performance, 3/12
by BWW News Desk - Feb 26, 2015

Orange County, Calif.—Feb. 25, 2015—An evening of profound emotion and beautiful introspection takes place when Pacific Symphony performs “Tchaikovsky's Pathétique,” a concert of deep personal meaning to Music Director Carl St.Clair during his 25th anniversary season. In January 1990, St.Clair auditioned to become the Symphony's maestro, and it was Tchaikovsky's eloquent and impassioned Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique,” that forged a connection between him and the orchestra—making this piece a must for his 25th season. Centering the program is the Symphony-commissioned violin concerto written by eight-time Academy Award-nominated composer James Newton Howard and performed by Grammy Award-winning violinist James Ehnes. Howard structured the second movement around a child's melody and dedicated it to the memory of St.Clair's first son, Cole Carsan St.Clair. The performance is being recorded live for CD release along with Howard's first Symphony-commissioned work, “I Would Plant a Tree” (2009), furthering St.Clair's and the Symphony's endeavor to support the works of living composers. There's no question that Reno Sweeney, the bad girl with a good heart and a big voice is steering the madcap cruise known as Anything Goes, on the stage of The Warner Theatre for two nights, February 25-26 '15. The ship (show), currently sailing (touring) around the country, is based on the 2011 Broadway revival, directed and choreographed by the venerable Kathleen Marshall, and does a good job of bringing Cole Porter's irresistible songs, a good dose of slapstick comedy and lots of true (or not?) love together into an evening of song and dance fun, led by the charismatic Reno. Megan McLachlan Releases LOAN SOMEMegan McLachlan Releases LOAN SOME
by BWW News Desk - Feb 23, 2015

Serealities is an online fiction site producing serial stories. It's like watching a favorite TV show. What's different? Readers vote on what happens in the web-series. Follow new episodes on Serealities each week! How It Works: Read each week's episode, Vote on what happens next week, and Repeat . . . each week! Readers can become a part of their favorite character's fate by following one of Serealities featured stories and casting their vote in this week's poll. Readers can vote to change the story! 'Loan Some' is one of their Serealities, and the author has now written this prequel novella. It's been a bad week for Vera. She lost the job she loved as a librarian and ended a comfortable and seemingly reliable relationship. So when her eye catches a job ad for a company that boasts 'a library of characters for every occasion,' impulse (and the word 'library') compels her to respond. Shortly thereafter, Vera has accepted her first assignment from Loan Some, a business that rents out people who play parts at special occasions. Need a mourner at your funeral or a pretend girlfriend to make your ex-wife jealous at a comic book convention? Look no further. The rules are strict: hide your identity, and no fraternizing with the clients. But as Vera begins relaxing into her new role-or rather, litany of roles-she finds herself attracted to several men, including the charming and flirtatious Greg Goodman as well as Cole, the sizzling nephew of the Loan Some CEO. Vera's comfortable, if unusual, existence comes to an abrupt halt when she finds herself face-to-face with the woman she's been tracking for the last thirty-or-so years-the mother who abandoned her. Will Vera be able to maintain her alias amid the family she never knew she had? Loan Some is available in both print and ebook formats. Book Details: Loan Some By Megan McLachlan Publisher: Serealities Press Published: January 2015 ISBN: 978-0692308097 ASIN: B00T59TCC4 Pages: 98 Genre: Chick lit, Romantic Comedy About The Author: Megan McLachlan graduated from Allegheny College with a degree in creative writing. Photo Coverage: New Film DELI MAN Screens at Friars ClubPhoto Coverage: New Film DELI MAN Screens at Friars Club
by Stephen Sorokoff - Feb 19, 2015

It was an emotional and touching night for lovers of Pastrami, Corned Beef, Lox, White Fish, Blintzes, Pickles, Cole Slaw and Mustard at the Friars last night. Cohen Media Group had the screening of The Movie Deliman in the Milton Berle Room. This film by Erik Greenberg Anjou celebrates 160 years of tradition and great stories by the Jewish Deli owners, operators and fanatics who are keeping the lox sliced thin and the Pastrami hot in the Jewish delicatessens that are still thriving around the world. Besides the food, Ziggy Gruber, operator of Kenny and Ziggy's in Houston, Texas is the star of this funny and heartwarming documentary. The film reflects the heart of a vital ethnic history. It's also a love story, not just about the food, but about the preservation of family, laughter and community that remains a fundamental part of a trip to a Jewish Delicatessen. What better place to see the wonderful film than the Friars Club were those traditions are celebrated every day. After the talk back with Ziggy Gruber, Fyvesh Finkel and Erik Greenberg Anjou, maitre d' Giuseppe Tarillo welcomed everyone into the Frank Sinatra Dinning Room. I guess that's what you call Jewish Fusion. It's great "having what the Friars were having". (more...)
