BWW Review: Shopping Is Serious Business in Cheryl Stern's Hilarious and Poignant SHOES AND BAGGAGE
by Victoria Ordin - Aug 28, 2018

Broadway veteran Cheryl Stern's SHOES AND BAGGAGE, incubated at Nancy Manocherian's The Cell, is a sharply-written musical comedy gem about a woman's lifelong obsession with shopping. The autobiographical tale by the Jonathan Larson award-winning writer (who also wrote the lyrics for the fine music by her Drama Desk nominee and Emmy winning-composer husband, Tom Kochan) is punctuated both by moments of genuine self-awareness and tragedy--from the loss of her best friend to cancer to 9/11. Under Josh Barros' direction, the result is a ferociously honest show that doubles as a memoir about a 'working [stage] actor' (not to be confused with a 'star'), whose Jewishness lovingly and palpably informs every scene.

CHEERS TO SARAJEVO Comes to Alexander Upstairs
by Stephi Wild - Jul 20, 2018

1992 Bosnia, a bloody civil war begins. Cheers to Sarajevo tells the story of two lovers. A Bosnian Muslim and a Bosnian Serb. A love story. In the days of Yugoslavia their differing ethnicities was accepted as a norm in the cosmopolitan city of Sarajevo. Told through the lens of an ambitious South African conflict journalist who infiltrates their lives we follow the slow but steady decline of a lifelong friendship. Theirs is a story known to many Yugoslavs who were separated from one another and who turned on each other during a senseless war. It is a story known to people all over the world who are torn apart because of race, religion and the mass media that use war as their fodder.

Heather Marie Beck and Maggie Dransfield as mother and daughter Donna and Sophie Sheridan are delightful and heartwarming. Disco, universally accepted as delicious, is the keystone of this show, whether or not you love or have heard of ABBA. In today's tumult, an escape to a tropical paradise where conflict stems from wedding angst and family drama seems a wonderful notion.
