Based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, with book, music and lyrics by Lerner and Loewe, My Fair Lady is gloriously triumphant. The tale of a cockney flower girl transformed into an elegant lady features one of musical theatre's greatest scores. Songs include "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?," "With a Little Bit of Luck," "The Rain in Spain," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live," "Get Me to the Church on Time," and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face." The production is directed by Steve Dawson and Music Directed by Paul Smith. Music Worcester had a grand opening to its 157th season last night at beautiful Mechanics Hall, a treasure in downtown Worcester, presenting Patti LuPone in her latest solo concert program, DON'T MONKEY WITH BROADWAY. She shared the stage with her fantastic musical director/accompanist Joseph Thalken, and was joined by The Worcester Chorus for several songs in the second act. It was thrilling to hear so many signature songs performed live by one of the great Broadway divas. (more...)

One could say that the Machine chose me first, then I chose it. Adapting Elmer Rice's 1923 expressionist juggernaut was the long-time dream of librettist Jason Loewith. Apparently he had approached other composers with the project to no avail. When he finally inquired as to my interest in the project in January of 2004, I was working as a sound designer on a show he was producing at the Next Theatre Company in Evanston, Illinois, where he served as Artistic Director. Up to that point, I had never written a musical, nor did envision myself writing one and I had never read, seen or even heard of Elmer Rice's The Adding Machine. (more...)

Historic New Federal Theatre Training Workshops Move Uptown to Dwyer Cultural Center

The historic Theatre Training Workshops of Woodie King, Jr.'s New Federal Theatre will move uptown next month to Dwyer Cultural Center at 258 St. Nicholas Ave. (at 123rd Street).  They were previously held in spaces adjoining the theater's offices at 292 Henry Street.  The workshops have been a fertile training ground for leading African-American playwrights and actors.
