BWW Review: MATTEO LANE: STREISAND AT THE BONSOIR WITH HENRY KOPERSKI at Joe's Pub
by Tina Wargo - Sep 20, 2019

When I learned that Matteo Lane- comedian, singer, podcaster, and sometimes actor-against-his-own-will- would be at Joe's Pub with his cabaret act, there was no question whether or not I'd be there. Admittedly, I am a big fan of Lane. His charmingly confusing mix of approachability and smarter-than-you wit, his extremely specific and near-constant pop culture references, his loud, proud gayness, and his clear, seemingly boundless talent were enough, upon first listen to his podcast Inside The Closet, to lure me in and keep me excited for each weekly installation. So a live show, which not only promised music, comedy, and Barbra Streisand devotion, but whose description on the Public's website featured the words 'wacky,' 'unique,' and 'eccentric!?' It was like the show was being mounted just for me! And as a former gay kid who grew up inexplicably (or so I thought) obsessing over middle-aged actresses' talk show appearances, movie musicals, and the whisper of Celine Dion doing basically anything, I came to understand that there aren't many things in the world that truly feel like that. More specifically, there aren't many things that feel like that and deliver that. But take it from a now-27-year old gay woman, who attended Lane's show in a Rosie O'Donnell denim jacket: it was not only exactly what I wanted it to be; it was exactly what I needed it to be.

Photo Flash: Hollywood Museum & Councilman Mitch O'Farrell Present REAL TO REEL: PORTRAYALS AND PERCEPTIONS OF LGBT'S IN HOLLYWOOD
by A.A. Cristi - Jun 7, 2019

Lily Tomlin, upon accepting her award, remarked 'My partner Jane and I are honored and want to thank you for this award. It is amazing to see this whole outpouring for the LGBT community. Jane, couldnt be here tonight, but asked that I share her remarks 'We love the thought of being called Trail-Blazers. It makes us feel current and something out of Marvel Comics.'  Neither of us has a good sense of direction, so we thought being called trail-blazers implies that we somehow new where we were going. So thank you for thinking of us as trail-blazers, rather than as museum pieces.  Of course, there were times, Im afraid, we got lost on that trail and were more bewildered than blazing.  We are still blazing, but we have had to cool down a bit. After all, we need to take care not to add to global warming.'

BWW Review: THE RIVER BRIDE Refashions the Fairy Tale at Stages Repertory Theatre
by Audrey Morabito - Jan 30, 2019

As a part of Stages Repertory Theatre's 2nd Annual Sin Muros: A Latinx Theatre Festival, Marisela Treviño Orta's The River Bride is composed of an entirely Latinx cast. Orta's play is based on the style of folk tales and the real-life freshwater river dolphins--the "boto".  Her work certainly reads with a mystical vibe and mythical undertones, and it is no surprise that she has a background in poetry.

ARSENIC & OLD LACE Comes to St. Dunstan's Theatre in Bloomfield
by BWW News Desk - Jan 25, 2019

St. Dunstan's Theatre presents Joseph Kesselring's Arsenic and Old Lace. Filled with colorful characters and witty plot twists, this quirky comedy classic is one for the ages. Mortimer Brewster is living a happy life: he has a steady job as a drama critic at a prominent New York newspaper; he's just become engaged; and he gets to visit his sweet spinster aunts to announce the engagement. He always knew his once elite family bloodline had a bit of a mad gene (his brother believes himself to be Teddy Roosevelt). But his world gets turned upside down when he realizes his dear aunts have been poisoning lonely old men for years! At the same time, his long-lost homicidal brother, Jonathan, turns up with his phony plastic surgeon, Dr. Einstein. Mortimer is torn between covering up for his kin, wanting to marry the woman he loves, and maintaining his own sanity. An uproarious farce that results in a mix of laugh-out-loud hilarity and mayhem.
