Tell us a bit about Dick In Space.

It's Comedy Theatre, fast paced, character driven, lots of jokes, one liners and word play. Also has strong physical dimensions to suggest the weird and anarchic world of Dick Spacey, a psychotic film noir detective who has trouble in distinguishing between inner and outer worlds. There are murder hunt threads that veer off into constant strangeness and ridiculous sub plots. I wrote and performed a show a few years back called Chaos, Carnage and Kulture, which ran in Oxford and Stratford; Dick was one of the characters in it and audiences really responded, so I though I would do a whole show built around the character.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is ideal for this show - an eclectic audience looking for something a bit different. It's easy to stage. It's anarchic and, so I'm told, very funny. The Goons meet X Files meet Tom Waits meet Humphrey Bogart on hallucinogenic substances.

What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?

It stretches the boundaries of popular genres. It's not Stand Up Comedy but has elements and threads that would appeal to Stand Up fans. It's not a conventional play but is theatrical, with an inventive use of props, mime and unleashed lunacy. It all comes thick and fast so that after an hour people feel they've entered and engaged with a big character and powerful little story world.

What are the benefits of performing at the Free Fringe?

The infrastructure is brilliant - helpful, organised and aware that the overall goal is always to entertain. It cuts out some of the expensive overheads so that people who might not otherwise bring a show can do so in an entirely professional set up. The Free Fringe is a brilliant idea that works, due to the hard work and resourcefulness of those who manage it.

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

People who like inventive theatre, people who enjoy stand up comedy with a difference, fans of the surreal and the odd. People who want a lively, demanding and surprising experience.
