The wait for Shrek to arrive in Glasgow has been a lengthy one. The tickets for the three-week run went on sale almost two years ago and the audience in the King's Theatre were more than a little excited when the curtain went up!

Dean Chisnall makes a superb Shrek and I have the utmost respect for him making it through a two-hour performance in that costume! Understudy Nikki Bentley stepped in as Princess Fiona for tonight's performance and completely charmed the audience.

There are many elements of Shrek that you really have to see to believe. The musical is hilarious from start to finish and a large portion of this is down to Gerard Carey as Lord Farquaad. There are so many things that had me in stitches that wouldn't quite have the same effect reading it in a review!

Everything about this production is spectacular. The sets are quite possible the biggest and best I have seen in a touring production. I saw Shrek in London when it first opened and I don't feel like anything has been left out for the tour. The costumes are amazing and the puppetry is also executed brilliantly.

Don't be fooled into thinking this is a musical for the kids, it appeals to all ages. While there is a lot in it for children, there are a lot of jokes that (I hope) go over their heads! I also really enjoyed the few subtle references to other hit musicals along with many clever nods to other fairy tales.

Shrek is on tour around the UK.
