Released in 1956 and featuring music and lyrics from Cole Porter, High Society is a musical based on the earlier play and film The Philadelphia Story. It follows the story of wealthy socialite Tracy Lord who is in the midst planning an extravagant wedding ceremony when her ex-husband turns up to try and win her back.

The show has been well cast: Michael Praed provides a charismatic Dexter Haven, more reminiscent of Cary Grant in the original movie than the musical version. Sophie Bould, as Lord, gives a good performance during the first half but it was her rendition of "True Love" just before the interval that really made the audience sit up and take notice of her and she goes from strength to strength in the second act of the show. Daniel Boys makes a highly likeable Mike Connor and his performance of "You're Sensational" is the highlight of the second act.

The production of this show cannot be faulted, from the seamless, inventive set changes to the strong supporting cast, the excellent choreography, the family-friendly comedy and the beautiful score, which sounds as fresh today as it ever has. High Society remains an incredibly uplifting feelgood musical for anyone who enjoys vintage Hollywood.

High Society is on tour around the UK.
