First staged in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar is Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera which is based on the last seven days in the life of Jesus.

Glenn Carter returns to the role of Jesus which he has played both in the West End and on Broadway. Carter has fantastic stage presence and hits some eye-watering high notes especially during Act One finale Gethsemane.

What appeals most in Jesus Christ Superstar is the music. While it is a very visual musical it is packed with rock anthems mostly delivered by Tim Rogers who performs as Judas. Rachel Adedeji makes for an excellent Mary Magdalene with her rendition of I Don't Know How To Love Him being a highlight of the show.

I already loved the music from Jesus Christ Superstar having seen it stand alone in many "Songs of the Musicals" style concerts. I was unprepared for how much I would enjoy this thanks to the superb cast and terrific production values. I'm not entirely familiar with my Bible studies but I suspect there are fewer nipple tassels in the original story. This is an excellent production of a fantastic musical and I feel it is much more accessible to a regional audience than the recent arena tours.

Jesus Christ Superstar is on tour around the UK.
