Next up on the Main Stage, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey will present the New Jersey premiere of Bill Cain's Equivocation. When the Bard and his troupe of players receive a royal commission to dramatize the events surrounding the infamous Gunpowder Plot, the artist must confront the demons of his past, his present, and his obligations to the truth and artistic integrity. Equivocation was described in Variety as "one of the most bracingly intelligent, sizzlingly theatrical American plays in a decade." The Lincoln Theatre Association and the King Arts Complex are partnering to celebrate the most recent release of New York Times best-selling author, journalist, and Columbus native Wil Haygood on Tuesday, September 29. Showdown: Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court Nomination that Changed America is Haygood's sweeping epic about the tumultuous, real-life events surrounding the heated appointment of Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court justice, to be released September 15. Haygood will read excerpts from his book, discuss the journey that led him to recount this turbulent period of our history, and participate in a question and answer session. Rattlestick Playwrights Theater's Artistic Director David Van Asselt and Managing Director Brian Long have announced that HAMLET IN BED, written by Michael Laurence and directed by Lisa Peterson, will now open Thursday, September 17, a week later than the previously announced date of September 10. The change was made to accommodate for the holiday weekend. JACK will present the acclaimed performance collective, Sister Sylvester, with their new work, They Are Gone But Here Must I Remain which will preview on Thursday, September 3rd and  open on Friday, September 4th at JACK (505 1/2 Waverly Ave in Brooklyn). The company's New York premiere will run through September 19th. They Are Gone But Here Must I Remain, a multi-faceted piece, directed by Kathryn Hamilton, examines the ties between art and rebellion. Ten pianists have been chosen to advance to the Semifinals of Canada's Honens Piano Competition. The musicians (ages 22 to 30) come from six countries: Italy, Russia, South Korea, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United States. One pianist will be named the Honens Prize Laureate and win the world's largest award of its kind-$100,000 (CAN) and an artist development program valued at a half million dollars. The Semifinals and Finals of the Honens Piano Competition take place during the 2015 Honens Festival & Piano Competition in Calgary, September 3 to 12. (more...)
