Al Ravenna Festival arriva l'Opera North con KISS ME, KATE
by Valeria Venturelli - Jun 3, 2018

BWW Review: FATHERLAND, Lyric Hammersmith
by Dzifa Benson - Jun 1, 2018

"What's the earliest memory you have of your father?" This is the question, among many, that sets off a process of enquiry into the state of the nation's masculinity and its concerns through the prism of fatherhood in the verbatim play Fatherland. Thrillingly staged, it muscles beyond its documentary origins to excavate beneath the surface of a typically reticent, bloke-y nonchalance with great aplomb.

BWW Review: SWAN LAKE, Royal Opera House
by Vikki Jane Vile - May 24, 2018

There is no greater anticipation in the ballet world than that for a new Swan Lake. The unenviable pressure of this task has fallen to one of the Royal Opera House's current Artists in Residence, Liam Scarlett. Scarlett's more recent works for the Royal Ballet include the Age of Anxiety and Frankenstein, as well as the heart-wrenching No Man's Land for English National Ballet's Lest We Forget programme.

BWW Review: AS YOU LIKE IT/HAMLET, Shakespeare's Globe
by Marianka Swain - May 18, 2018

Michelle Terry's first season as Artistic Director of the Globe will be carefully scrutinised. Emma Rice's contentious exit raised important questions about the venue's purpose, its balancing of tradition and innovation, new and returning audiences, and about how we engage with Shakespeare in the 21st century.

BWW Review: CHICAGO, Phoenix Theatre
by Marianka Swain - Apr 19, 2018

Chicago's hit West End revival - which featured a constant revolving door of big names - closed in 2012 after almost 15 years. Now, it returns with the requisite stunt casting (Cuba Gooding Jr), but also with a cast of triple-threat stalwarts who illustrate the enduring strengths of this whip-smart, black-hearted musical.

BWW Review: OBSIDIAN TEAR/MARGUERITE & ARMAND/ELITE SYNCOPATIONS, Royal Opera House
by Vikki Jane Vile - Apr 16, 2018

The Royal Ballet's latest offering is a rather curious mixed bill containing contemporary, classical and carnivalesque works from three of its resident choreographers. On the surface each of them are tried and tested Opera House hits but together the programme feels confused with no common thread the weave them together.

BWW Review: English National Ballet's VOICES OF AMERICA, Sadler's Wells
by Vikki Jane Vile - Apr 14, 2018

Emerging from a winter of traditional crowd-pleasers featuring Nutcracker and La Sylphide, the dancers of English National Ballet were finally allowed to cut loose in this new mixed bill - thanks to some eerie swamp monsters and a new and unexpected club banger from William Forsythe. This certainly ain't the Kingdom of Sweets anymore.

Each first Saturday of every month, Thomas, Richard and Matthew walk. Out in the Peaks they travel up steep hills, over slippery rocks and through grassy terrain to escape the stresses of non-rural life. Never missing a trip, (except for the occasional Star Trek convention), the three of them discuss personal politics and the struggles of the past, as they move up and down the scenic path.

BWW Review: THE PLOUGH AND THE STARS, Lyric Hammersmith
by Charlie Wilks - Mar 21, 2018

A young girl in a football tee steps on stage and begins to sing a melodic tune. Her voice is angelic, lulling you into a fall sense of comfort - until she begins to choke on herself, coughing up copious amounts of blood.

BWW Review: BERNSTEIN CENTENARY, Royal Opera House
by Vikki Jane Vile - Mar 19, 2018

Following on from the Royal Ballet's popular story ballets such as Giselle and The Winter's Tale, the company now turn their attention to work of Leonard Bernstein to mark a century since his birth. It comes in the form of a stylish mixed bill of Bernstein's compositions created for the concert hall. The bill features two new works, first up is Wayne McGregor's Yugen, a short piece to the distinctive Chichester Psalms. It is, as expected, an intellectual and calculated McGregor work executed with precision to a collection of choral, but unexpectedly jazzy Hebrew texts.
