The National Ballet of Canada Announces Return to Live Performances for the 2021/22 Season

Barry Hughson, Executive Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced the principal casting for the long-awaited return to live performance. The 2021/22 season will open with Angels’ Atlas by Crystal Pite and Serenade by George Balanchine, onstage November 11 – 27, 2021 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company will present a unique compilation of highlights from the broadcast premieres of three acclaimed works by Lar Lubovitch including the duet from Concerto Six Twenty-Two, danced by the Lubovitch company; Othello, performed by San Francisco Ballet; and The Planets, created for an ensemble of both ice skaters and non-skating dancers from the US and Canada.

Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, and Barry Hughson, Executive Director, today announced that Canadians across the country will be able to enjoy the magic of The Nutcracker this holiday season. In partnership with Cineplex, a special presentation of the beloved classic, previously captured live at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, will be available to stream online on the Cineplex Store and shown at more than 50 Cineplex theatres across Canada from December 4, 2020.

Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, and Barry Hughson, Executive Director, today announced that the 2019/20 season concluded with a deficit for the first time since 2009, a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Annual General Meeting was held today at 7:00 pm virtually from Toronto.

The Bridge Initiative: Women+ in Theatre (TBI) offers a virtual series called SAI: Scratching our Artistic Itches. Every Sunday at 1pm, TBI presents a live, one-time-only reading of a unproduced play or a Pulitzer Prize winner. The playwrights are often in attendance and participate in the Q&A that follows. Actors are mostly from the Valley but some live in other parts of the country from Los Angeles to New York. And all participants receive a stipend for their time.

The Bridge Initiative: Women+ in Theatre (TBI) will be offering three regional premiere readings for its new play festival, Bechdel 3.0: Beyond the Test, at Tempe Center for the Arts, Saturday, March 28th. The three pieces feature diverse writers and creative teams, chosen by Producing Artistic Director Brenda Jean Foley in consultation with a panel of local theatre artists.
