BWW Reviews: Bucks County Playhouse Presents a Beautiful ON GOLDEN PONDBWW Reviews: Bucks County Playhouse Presents a Beautiful ON GOLDEN POND
by Kelli Curtin - Jul 16, 2015

I would describe Bucks County Playhouse's production of ON GOLDEN POND, under the direction of Jonathan Silverstein, as comforting. The show is a warm-hearted and beautiful production with a cast that skillfully crafts a portrait of a family. The story is nostalgic and takes the audience on a journey back to simpler times. ON GOLDEN POND sheds light on the complexities of relationships and how they change over time. ON GOLDEN POND at Bucks County Playhouse pays homage to aging and family relationships, and this production has a solid and outstanding cast. (more...)

SOUND OFF Special Edition: Top 10+ Most Important Gay MusicalsSOUND OFF Special Edition: Top 10+ Most Important Gay Musicals
by Pat Cerasaro - Jul 1, 2015

The landmark Supreme Court ruling handed down late last week instating national legalization of marriage rights for all individuals is a cause celebre for the country at large, particularly the Broadway community who has vocally and vociferously fought for equal acceptance for all for decades. Given the preponderance of LGBT people in the theatre community itself, this victory is a particular joy for many to celebrate. As a result of this momentous event, now is the ideal time to take a look back at the most important and notable musicals that have appeared on Broadway in the last several decades to shine a light on the gay community, ranging from portrayals of closeted individuals trapped and unable to find acceptance in a conservative society all the way to the out and proud representations available to see in some currently running smash hits. Additionally, who could forget all of musicals that have touched upon LGBT issues over the years - from the campy to the controversial to the highly acclaimed. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Theatre Memphis Brings THE PHILADELPHIA STORY SouthBWW Reviews: Theatre Memphis Brings THE PHILADELPHIA STORY South
by Joseph Baker - Apr 27, 2015

George Cukor's 1940 film version of Philip Barry's THE PHILADELPHIA STORY was Katharine Hepburn's return to glory after the actress had been labeled 'box office poison' after the failure of several films. 021The savvy Hepburn was able to bend MGM to her will when it wanted to film Barry's play, and the end result rewarded everyone involved: Hepburn, her old RKO co-star Cary Grant, and the up and coming James Stewart. Not only were Oscar nominations and wins in store, but at the center of it all was Hepburn in all her patrician, high cheek-boned elegance. She may have given greater performances as the tragic, dope-addicted 'Mary Tyrone' in the film version of Eugene O'Neill's LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT or as the caustic, sparring 'Eleanor of Aquitaine' in James Goldman's THE LION IN WINTER, but for those who want to see Hepburn at the height of her unusual beauty and comedic gifts, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY is a must. Having seen the film numerous times, I was wary of Theatre Memphis' staging of Barry's work. THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, once seen, leaves such an impression that it's rather like tackling a remake of THE WIZARD OF OZ or GONE WITH THE WIND or THE GODFATHER. Director Jason Spitzer has taken the dare, and he and his cast have mostly succeeded in the satiny, stylized production currently playing at Theatre Memphis. (more...)
