Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, Little Women follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, but the publishers are not interested – her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her that she has to do better and write more from herself. Begrudgingly taking this advice, Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America.
BWW Review: BEAUTIFUL - THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL at The Kennedy Center
by Pamela Roberts
- Dec 19, 2021
Before stepping foot into the theatre, you’ve already experienced the best aspect of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical – the extraordinary songs. The production, touring to the Kennedy Center through January 2, highlights the best of Carole King’s hits and reminds us of the tremendous range of her talent. Sadly, that narrative arc of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical is at such a frantic pace and is so light on details it takes a fascinating true story of grit, luck, and talent and renders it a flat, bland, homogenized variety-show telling of King’s career.

BWW Review: PARADISE SQUARE Pre-Broadway Production
by Rachel Weinberg
- Nov 18, 2021
PARADISE SQUARE takes the theme of the proverbial American melting pot deeply to heart. The musical centers on the lower Manhattan neighborhood of Five Points in the 1860s, where many white Irish immigrants and free Black Americans lived together. Though the show's narrator, Paradise Square saloon owner Nelly O'Brien, tells audiences that Five Points was notorious for being a slum, she also makes clear that the neighborhood's inhabitants enjoyed deep friendships and romantic relationships.
BWW Review: LITTLE WOMEN: THE BROADWAY MUSICAL at Artistry Theatre And Visual Arts
by Joe Sarafolean
- Nov 18, 2021
Little Women written by Louisa May Alcott, is perhaps known as one of the most formative literary works when it comes to young women. So, it may come as no surprise that it has been adapted countless times for the screen and stage, perhaps most notably the 2019 film directed by Greta Gerwig and the 2005 musical starring Sutton Foster in the star turning role of Jo March.
BWW Review: LITTLE WOMEN, Park Theatre
by Cindy Marcolina
- Nov 18, 2021
The March sisters seem to spike in popularity every decade or so, due to films, series or feminist movements. Most recently Greta Gerwig turned Louisa May Alcott’s novel into a high grossing blockbuster featuring a stellar cast. Now the Park Theatre have resurrected Little Women in the form of a 16-year-old Broadway musical that nobody seems to remember even though it won Sutton Foster a Tony nomination. History repeats itself. With a book by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland, and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, the piece is sadly unmemorable, but the company give their best nonetheless. A list of forgettable songs populate a traditional musical with pacing issues that’s nothing to write home about.
