New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) (Artistic Director James C. Nicola and Managing Director Jeremy Blocker) has just announced its complete 2016/17 Season. The season will kick-off in Fall 2016 with NAT TURNER IN JERUSALEM by NYTW 2050 Fellow Nathan Alan Davis(Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea), directed by Megan Sandberg-Zakian (The Convert). It is followed by the previously announced production of William Shakespeare's OTHELLO, directed by NYTW Usual Suspect and Tony Award winner Sam Gold (Fun Home) and featuring David Oyelowo (Royal Shakespeare Company's The Histories, Selma) in the title role and Daniel Craig (Betrayal, Spectre) as 'Iago', in Winter 2016. Spring 2017 will bring THE OBJECT LESSON, by Geoff Sobelle (all wear bowlers), directed by NYTW Usual Suspect David Neumann (Restless Eye), with scenic installation by Steven Dufala. The season will conclude with NYTW Usual Suspect Mfoniso Udofia's SOJOURNERS and HER PORTMANTEAU, presented in repertory, directed by NYTW Usual Suspect and former 2050 Fellow Ed Sylvanus Iskandar (The Mysteries). Next at Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC), stage and screen actors Maulik Pancholy (Weeds, 30 Rock) and Peter Gadiot (Once Upon a Time in Wonderland) will be seen playing Katherina and Petruchio respectively in Ed Sylvanus Iskandar's bold new interpretation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Iskandar, known for his striking and immersive directorial style, completes STC's 2015-2016 season with this production, playing in Sidney Harman Hall from May 17 to June 26, 2016. (more...)

In an effort to continue its vision to provide a training ground for the next generation of theatre artists, the Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) has launched its first-ever Directors' Studio, a series of workshops and discussions designed to investigate the craft of theatrical direction created for local, early-career directors. By application, six directors have been selected for the 2015-2016 season's Directors' Studio: Catrin Rowenna Davies, Rick Hammerly, Lee Liebeskind, Carter Lowe, Angela Kay Pirko, and Jason Schlasfstein. Dorset Theatre Festival's 2015 New Play Reading Series concludes on Monday, August 24th with Kate Moira Ryan's Hipsterly Ever After. Ryan is a New York-based playwright whose play The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, produced off-Broadway by Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner, won a GLAAD Award. She was also a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn prize for her play Hadley's Mistake. She has received numerous fellowships including the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship to EST, the Sundance Institute, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Directing the reading is Mark Armstrong, Director of New Work for off-Broadway's Keen Company and the Executive Director for The 24 Hour Plays. Recent directing credits include Christopher Shinn's The Coming World, Lucas Hnath's Odile's Ordeal (both Williamstown) and Dan O'Brien's From Kandahar to Canada (EST). (more...)
