Russian-born violin virtuoso Philippe Quint - lauded for his "fervidly expressive" playing (San Francisco Chronicle) and "bravura technique" (The Times of London) - will showcase his formidable endurance in performances of Antonio Vivaldi's timeless The Four Seasons and Astor Piazzolla's nuevo tango masterpiece The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires with the Santa Barbara Symphony on March 18 and 19. Conducted by Maestro Nir Kabaretti, and including Haydn's dramatic Symphony No. 101 ("The Clock"), the concerts will take place at 8 pm on Saturday, March 18, and at 3 pm on Sunday, March 19, in Santa Barbara's Granada Theatre. Chicago Opera Theater (COT) presents "The Invention of Morel," a world premiere of the co-commissioned opera composed by Stewart Copeland, co-founder and drummer of The Police. Based on Argentinian author Adolfo Bioy Casares' 1940 novel "La invencion de Morel," Copeland's new adaptation examines the triumph of time-bending love over convention in a story of adoration and desire. "The Invention of Morel" features London-based actor, director and writer Jonathan Moore as Stage Director/Librettist together with COT's Artistic Director Andreas Mitisek as Conductor. The press performance will be February 18 at 7:30 p.m. Subsequent performances will be February 24 at 7:30 p.m.and February 26 at 3 p.m.   (more...)

Astor Piazzolla pays homage to the music of Antonio Vivaldi with his own four movement, tango-inflected 'Four Seasons,' which reflects the life and soul of his native Buenos Aires. This signature work from the 1960s is deeply informed by Piazzolla's multicultural upbringing, which saw him introduce influences of classical, jazz, rock and klezmer into a unique Nuevo Tango style. Originally composed for Piazzolla's own quintet, we feature the new PSU violin professor, Tomas Cotik, in an arrangement for solo violin and string orchestra by the Russian composer Leonid Desyatnikov.
