A NIGHT OF WORK-IN-PROGRESS FILMS

Get your film fix with three short flicks as new filmmakers present their latest works-in-progress and discuss the process of documenting stories of African Americans. This special showing features Melissa Haizlip's Mr. SOUL!, which looks at the host of television's first "black Tonight Show"; Nicole Franklin's Little Brother, which gives black boys a unique voice; and The New Black by Yoruba Richen, which marks African American involvement in the LGBT civil rights movement.

Blazing Tongues: The Singers & Writers of Lenox Lounge

Blazing Tongues is a celebration of the written word, of music, and of their intersection. This two-part performance is part of the inaugural Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival.

Tuesday - Blazing Tongues features the music and words of Billie Holiday and Zora Neale Hurston as performed by vocalist Queen Esther and her band and Farrah Griffin.

Wednesday - Blazing Tongues will feature the music and words of Dinah Washington and James Baldwin as performed by Marcelle Davies-Lashley and Carl Hancock Rux.

THE FATS WALLER DANCE PARTY with Jason Moran and Meshell Ndegeocello

Jason Moran and Meshell Ndegeocello transform Harlem Stage into a dance party, as they awaken the spirit of Fats Waller and re-create the dance floor of Harlem's long-gone jazz shrine, Small's Paradise. Backed by a seven-piece band, Moran's musical genius shapes the party
through lively compositions and arrangements, while Ndegeocello uses her masterful skills to rework Waller's applauded tunes. Join us as this dynamic duo take us back to the good ol' days when Fats got the joint jumpin' with late night jams. The Fats Waller Dance Party is part of the inaugural Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival.

Long live the legacy of The Park Place, as the 2011 Grammy-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra pays tribute to East Harlem's sultry dance club that welcomed Afro-Cuban music as it made its way to New York in the 1920s. In this special edition of Habana/Harlem, Harlem Stage joins forces with the orchestra to celebrate its newly released album, Viva la Tradición. This performance is part of the inaugural Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival.

Teen poets, spoken word artists, emcees, scholars and activists with something to say are invited to share their powerful and important voices in this monthly open-mic series featuring youth DJs to provide the beat. This safe, uncensored space provides a platform for young spoken-word and other artists speak up. No audience age limit; the young and young-at-heart are invited to show some love for the next generation of performing artists.
