The Star Tribune reports that the Guthrie Theater will furlough most of its full-time staff -- about 120 individuals -- for one week this month. The theater is dark throughout January "but there's still work being done here," Trish Santini, director of external relations, told the paper. "The organization has not done a complete shutdown."

The Guthrie recently announced that it had finished its latest fiscal year with a $438,000 deficit, on top of $1.1 million in expenses.

The building will be undergoing repairs and updates while it is closed to the public, including replacing the houselights operating system, cleaning the carpets and refinishing the floors in the Dowling Studio lobby.

Following the furloughs, rehearsals begin for Shakespeare's OTHELLO on February 4, and Kneehigh Theatre's TRISTAN & YSEULT comes to the Guthrie on February 13.
