Gulfshore Playhouse Offering New Education Programming in the New Year

Gulfshore Playhouse has all new educational programs for students and adults starting up in uary of 2010. 

Students ages 12 and up will be able to participate in The S.T.A.R. (Student Theatre Artists in Residence), after-school training workshops in acting, mask and costume design.

Gulfshore Playhouse announced it's newest Educational Initiative, The Saturday Series. The Saturday Series is an array of offerings from Playhouse Designers, Directors and visiting Playwrights and Actors, each offered in one-day bite-sized pieces.  They're informational, educational, fun and enriching.  And because you only need sign up for one, they're easy to commit to as well.  For adults ages 16 and up. 

Saturday Series 

How to Build a Play

Playwright James Sherman, author of Beau Jest and member of the Victory Gardens Playwrights Ensemble, presents this workshop to explore the building blocks for creating a play.  Through the use of lectures and demonstrations, Sherman examines the process of play writing.  Examples of classic and contemporary plays will be viewed, in-class exercises will be utilized, and Sherman will be available to discuss his decades long career in the theatre and the life of a playwright. (Note: James Sherman will also be holding a special talk-back after the performances of Beau Jest on Thursday February 25th and Friday February 26th.)

From Page to Stage: Development of a Play or Musical

Join Gulfshore Playhouse Founder Kristen Coury as she relates the exciting journey from the "lightbulb" moment of an idea through the grueling process of finessing the script, getting it to the producers and the exciting prospect of opening night.  Laugh with Kristen as she relates stories of her Broadway experiences, as well as her work on new projects -helping authors bring their work from the page to the stage.

Stage Management Master Class

Ever wonder what it takes to make a show run?  Come and learn the process with Gulfshore Playhouse's own Production Stage Manager, Melanie J. Lisby.  Take this 90 minute look behind the scenes and see the process from start to finish as Melanie takes you through step by step from before rehearsals begin to closing night.  See what Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers do to make each show happen every night.

History of Greek Theatre: The Golden Age

Instructor Jason K. McCain will discuss the historical significance of 5th Century Greek Theatre, during the height of its Golden Age.  Topics will cover its contributions to theatre, including its origins, festivals, City Dionysia, Aristotle's Poetics, tragedies, comedies, early dramatic structure, performance, and major plays and playwrights.  This lecture will also discuss Greek theatre's contribution to technical theatre, including masks, costumes, architecture and scenic design.

The Business of Show Business

You don't want to miss this seminar by Allen Fitzpatrick (in the Gulfshore Playhouse production of Honour), Allen is a NY actor and a veteran of 35 years on and off-Broadway, including Les Mis, Damn Yankees, Sunset Boulevard and many more. Join Allen in the theatre, as he talks about getting started in acting, getting the right training, networking and showcasing, how to get auditions, getting an agent, what happens in the casting process, Equity vs non-Equity, lifestyles, salaries, and more. This interactive is your opportunity to ask questions and get answers.

Costume Design: The Process of Designing a Show

Join Playhouse Costume Designer Jennifer Murray and learn how costumes help define the characters that live in the world of the play.  Understanding of the principles of the design process and costuming begins with the first script reading and ends with the closing of a production. The workshop will cover the roles and responsibilities of the costume designer and explore the employment opportunities outside the world of the theatre.

Get Inside Lighting Design

Join lighting designer, Lisa Soverino as she share her theory and practice of lighting as it pertains to The Playhouse's production of A Doll's House.  Lisa will discuss scenes from the play and how lighting choices were made, what led to the choices and the role research, equipment options, and collaboration with the director and other designers play in this process. Lisa will also share her insight into the lifestyle of a designer, career options and if time permits, equipment systems. 

March 27

Shakespearean verse

What is Shakespearean verse? How do we break it down to read for pleasure, act it out for performance or prepare Shakespeare for an audition piece.  Join Steven Cole Hughes (actor in the Gulfshore Playhouse production of A Doll's House) as he takes you on a stroll through the ins and outs of Shakespearean verse, including a sonnet from Romeo and Juliet. 

March 27 OR April 3 (this is offered on two dates, just pick one)

Gulfshore Playhouse Adult Programming

Join Gulfshore Playhouse's professional teaching artists in a non-competitive environment playing theatre games and learning the art of improvising.  If you are down for "the season" we encourage you to come play with us. Aside from having good old fashioned fun, your communication & presentation skills will be enriched.  For the more serious actor, we encourage you to bring your audition pieces for professional coaching.   A true New York style acting class where instruction is individualized to your needs so all levels of experience can take this class.

After the success of their summer 2009 intensive and fall class offerings Gulfshore Playhouse is excited to announce all new S.T.A.R., Student Theatre Artist in Residence, after-school classes beginning in January for ages 12 and up. 

Acting Technique For the Stage

Join Gulfshore Playhouse's professional teaching artists and learn how to take apart and score a script, analyze characters, improvise, prepare monologues and/or scenes for auditions, and share your work when you are ready for presentation.  Come play with them and develop your skills.

Mask to Performance

Join actress Beth Hylton, Nora in Gulfshore Playhouse's production of A Doll's House, and explore how masks made from paper plates can transform you, the actor.   Working inside the mask you will explore how it changes your physicality and sense of self.  Then you will remove the mask, keep the "silhouette" and translate the character into a monologue you already have memorized.  This is a fun exploration for actors.

Students will receive a discounted enrollment rate of $40 on the costume workshop or $20 on the mask workshop when they also enroll in one of the three acting series.
