The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association today announced the winners of the Young Artists Competition, generously sponsored by Fidelity Investments. The April 7 competition finals were held on stage at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with violinist Eleanor Dunbar and pianist Alice Hyoung winning an opportunity to perform with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and conductor Thomas Wilkins. The Young Artists Finale concert, a private event, will take place on June 26, 2012 at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The Young Artists Competition was open to all public high school students in Los Angeles County.

For the 2012 Young Artists Competition, ten violinists and eight pianists in grades 9 through 12 competed in a preliminary round on March 31, where they were asked to perform an unaccompanied classical selection of their choice. In the April 7 finals, three violinists performed the first movement of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26, and three pianists performed the first movement of Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22. The two winners will perform works by Bruch and Saint-Saëns at the June 26 Young Artists Finale concert.

A panel of musicians served as judges for the competition, including LA Phil violinists Mark Kashper, Elizabeth Baker, and Bing Wang, and LA Phil keyboardist Joanne Pearce Martin, along with pianists Walter Ponce and Gavin Martin.
