REVEREND BILLY & THE STOP SHOPPING CHOIR

Sundays, November 1 - December 20 at 2:00PM

$12 (Nov 1 & 8) / $15 (Nov 15, 22, 29 & Dec 6, 13, 20)

Fresh from touring the West Coast with Neil Young, singing activists Reverend Billy & The Stop Shopping Choir return with their new show The Earth Wants YOU! The choir will mark their residency with the release of a new album, Resist Extinction, premiering ten new songs on the first installment, November 1. Directed by Savitri D, with musical direction by Nehemiah Luckett, the choir represents a diverse array of economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds - scientists, teachers, therapists, artists, builders, dog walkers, actors, writers and executives. The core of their work is its activism, which is the source material for their output. The group has been arrested many times, especially with Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter, and are now working to ban the Monsanto herbicide "Roundup," which is sprayed in NYC parks and is carcinogenic.

SHAWN MULLINS

Monday, November 2 at 9:30PM

$20

Singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins readily admits that several of the songs on his new album, My Stupid Heart (October 23, 2015), address his perceived relationship failures. In fact, many were written as he was falling out of his third marriage; in the title tune, he actually chides himself for being such a romantic. But it's also a bit of a joke, he says, because he firmly believes in following his heart - no matter where it leads. Though he may be wearing a little more emotional armor this time, he's also armed with new insights, so many of which are relayed in these songs. And when he steps onstage each night, he sings them with all the passion he's got in his anything-but-stupid heart.

DONNIE FRITTS W/ JOHN PAUL WHITE

Wednesday, November 4 at 9:30PM

$20

Oh My Goodness is Donnie Fritts's most polished record to date, an elevated and slight departure from the funky Muscle Shoals sound he's known for, but with every bit the powerhouse songwriting that made the world take notice decades ago. "People don't make records with 71 year-old guys," he says, his humility always sitting shotgun by his talent. John Paul White, formerly of the Grammy Award-winning duo The Civil Wars and presently co-founder of Single Lock Records and owner of Sun Drop Studios in Florence, AL., befriended Donnie in 2013 when he asked him to play at the Muscle Shoals documentary premiere in Florence. Later, White insisted they cut an album together. What began as a minimalist work - Donnie's raspy voice and his 1970's-era Wurlitzer - morphed into a rich and deep work. Oh My Goodness is an amalgamation of fresh sound and honed talent backed by Nashville and Muscle Shoals legends, and rising brilliants alike.

DENAI MOORE

Friday, November 6 at 11:30PM

$14

Stratford-raised Denai Moore has gone through a telling transition since first uploading an early recording of her 2012 demo Flaws. It was a beautifully sung, folk and R'n'B-informed track that brought Moore quick attention. Flaws showed that under her broad ideas, there belied a grit to her songwriting that was fresh and unique. The inventive yet simple track formed the blueprint for her future work. Her captivating I Swore EP drew 2014 to a melodic close and gave a hint as to what's to come - namely her new album Elsewhere, due out in the US on October 23, 2015. These songs, raw in subject matter, are united by heartbreak, testing times and opportunity, all written and performed by a young woman with the world at her feet and her expectations looking up to the stars. Produced predominantly by Rodaidh McDonald (The XX/Sampha/Daughter) at his XL Studios, the space and atmosphere that revolves around Moore's vocals makes for a chilling, intoxicating and quite beautiful listen.

ECHOES OF ETTA

Saturday, November 7 at 9:30PM

$30

Echoes of Etta, the multi award-winning Etta James tribute returns to Joe's Pub to celebrate the release of their first live in-concert recording. After a featured appearance on NBC's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a successful tour of Southeast Asia, and an exclusive appearance at the Commissioner's Tailgate for Superbowl XLVIII, MRM Productions is proud to bring back William Blake and Michael Thomas Murray in the MAC award-winning Show of the Year: Echoes of Etta.

Blake's peerless vocal prowess as an R&B and Jazz singer has made him the darling of the New York nightlife scene, from Birdland to the Carlyle, Town Hall to Carnegie, Brandy's to the Duplex. Teamed with acclaimed music director, pianist, and Echoes conceiver, Michael Thomas Murray (The Chantels, Forever Dusty, 50 Shades! The Musical), Blake has found the perfect vehicle for his soulful three octave range and guileless lyric interpretation in what BroadwayWorld calls "One of the best tribute shows of this, or any year."

JULIE FOLDESI

Sunday, November 8 at 9:30PM

$15

Julie Foldesi's sound has ties to bluegrass, folk, country and pop, and this album is singularly hers. She is often compared to artists such as Brandi Carlile, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Joni Mitchell, etc. This evening will feature her band. This singer-songwriter and Broadway actress has long awaited this next CD release, having started recording the album as she found out she was pregnant with her now almost one-year old.

COWBOYS & FRENCHMEN

Friday, November 13 at 11:30PM

$12

Cowboys & Frenchmen present a novel take on the American musical canon by blending traditional American folk and pop music with elements of contemporary R&B and modern jazz. The music exploits surprises at every turn, and presents a musical journey through the lens of five 21st century improvisers. Currently based in NYC, Cowboys & Frenchmen is comprised of some of the brightest rising stars on the New York Jazz scene, and can be found touring the world.

TELLY LEUNG

Monday, November 23 at 7:00PM

$30

On his night off from his starring role in Broadway's Allegiance, Telly Leung (Broadway's RENT, GODSPELL & Television's GLEE) will celebrate the release of his sophomore album, Songs for You, out on October 23, 2015. He will be joined by a full band, led by musical director Gary Adler (ALTERBOYZ), singing songs from the new album - and also some favorites from his 2012 debut album, {i'll cover you}. Experience the "clear, sweet tenor" (Variety) of Leung in his Joe's Pub solo debut!

WALLACE RONEY

Friday, November 27 at 7:30PM

$20

Wallace Roney, himself, is historic. He is the only trumpeter personally taught by Miles Davis, who remained his teacher and mentor for close to 10 years. Their performance together at the Montreaux Jazz Festival is considered one of the top 20 most important events in music history. Roney is heralded as an "improviser who loves complicated almost mathematical lines and who performs with catlike grace" (The New York Times). The trumpeter, composer and bandleader uses his consummate artistry and eagerness to explore and transcend musical boundaries. This has led him to collaborate with such diverse musicians as Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Carole King, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Prince, Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell, among numerous others.

Roney has recorded over a dozen albums as a leader - each recording illuminating his keen compositional chops and versatility as a bandleader and composer. At Joe's Pub, Roney will debut music from his new album Powerhouse (Chesky Records) in honor of his friend Bob Belden, producer for the project. This recording embraces many elements of the jazz world: the perpetual idea of using technology to improve the world around you that Miles Davis made so clear; the continuation of the generational passing of knowledge through actual living situations; the spontaneous nature of improvised music; and, above all, the desire to discover new things, to improve, develop and add a new dimension to the listening experience for all lovers of music. Buster Williams (bass) and Lenny White (drums) will join Roney for this event.

Named for Public Theater founder Joe Papp, Joe's Pub at The Public opened in 1998 and plays a vital role in The Public's mission of supporting young artists while providing established artists with an intimate space and superior acoustics to perform and develop new work. Joe's Pub consistently presents the best in live music and performance nightly, continuing its commitment to diversity, production values, community and artistic freedom. In addition, Joe's Pub features seasonal dinner and bar menus from acclaimed Chef Andrew Carmellini. As part of The Public's programming downtown at its Astor Place home, Joe's Pub showcases talent from all over the world, hosting approximately 800 shows and serving over 100,000 audience members annually. Joe's Pub also offers unique opportunities like New York Voices, an artist commissioning program that provides musicians (Allen Toussaint, Ethan Lipton, Toshi Reagon, Bridget Everett and more) resources and collaborators to develop new theatrical works; and PUB CLUB, the venue's new artist development program.

The Public Theater, under the leadership of Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, is the only theater in New York that produces Shakespeare, the classics, musicals, contemporary and experimental pieces in equal measure. Celebrating his 10th anniversary season at The Public, Eustis has created new community-based initiatives designed to engage audiences like Public Lab, Public Studio, Public Forum, Public Works, and a remount of the Mobile Shakespeare Unit. The Public continues the work of its visionary founder, Joe Papp, by acting as an advocate for the theater as an essential cultural force, and leading and framing dialogue on some of the most important issues of our day. Creating theater for one of the largest and most diverse audience bases in New York City for nearly 60 years, today the Company engages audiences in a variety of venues-including its landmark downtown home at Astor Place, which houses five theaters and Joe's Pub; the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, home to its beloved, Free Shakespeare in the Park; and the Mobile Unit, which tours Shakespearean productions for underserved audiences throughout New York City's five boroughs. The Public's wide range of programming includes free Shakespeare in the Park, the bedrock of the Company's dedication to making theater accessible to all; Public Works, a new initiative that is designed to cultivate new connections and new models of engagement with artists, audiences and the community each year; new and experimental stagings at The Public at Astor Place, including Public Lab; and a range of artist and audience development initiatives including its Public Forum series, which brings together theater artists and professionals from a variety of disciplines for discussions that shed light on social issues explored in Public productions. The Public Theater is located on property owned by the City of New York and receives annual support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; and in October 2012 the landmark building downtown at Astor Place was revitalized to physically manifest the Company's core mission of sparking new dialogues and increasing accessibility for artists and audiences, by dramatically opening up the building to the street and community, and transforming the lobby into a public piazza for artists, students, and audiences. Key elements of the revitalization included an expanded and refurbished lobby; the addition of a mezzanine level with a new restaurant lounge, The Library, designed by the Rockwell Group. The Public Theater is currently represented on Broadway by the Tony Award-winning Fun Home and Lin-Manuel Miranda's acclaimed American musical Hamilton. The Public has received 47 Tony Awards, 167 Obie Awards, 52 Drama Desk Awards, 48 Lortel Awards, 31 Outer Critics Circle Awards, 13 New York Drama Critics Awards, and four Pulitzer Prizes.
