JOSEPHINE & I

PART OF THE PUBLIC THEATER'S 2014-15 SEASON

Tuesdays-Sundays, NOW-April 5 at 7PM

Plus Sundays at 3PM

$40-50 / $30 Members

Following a critically acclaimed run at London's Bush Theatre, Olivier nominated actress and writer CUSH JUMBO (The River, Julius Caesar, "Getting On") brings her "tour de force" (Times) one-woman show JOSEPHINE AND I to the Public Theater. Of the current production, The New York Times said, "Cush Jumbo is transfixing!" Featuring swinging jazz and ragtime rhythms, this theatrical event, directed by Tony nominee PHYLLIDA LLOYD (Julius Caesar, Mary Stuart, The Iron Lady, Mamma Mia!), interweaves a modern day story of an ambitious young woman with the fascinating life of the peerless, fearless Josephine Baker - first African-American performer to rise to international prominence, a French Resistance spy and civil rights activist, and muse to Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway.

ETHAN LIPTON & HIS ORCHESTRA

Wednesday, March 25 9:30PM & Thursday, April 30 at 7:00PM

$20

Dubbed 'Best Lounge Act of 2009' by New York Magazine, Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra return to play their edgy brand of jazz/folk/alternative nosh with a chewy singer-songwriter center. With melancholy wit and a cockeyed worldview, sepia-toned frontman Lipton and band mates Eben Levy (guitar), Ian Riggs (bass) and Vito Dieterle (sax) deliver songs steeped in mixed-message sincerity and soul. The band has appeared at Celebrate Brooklyn, MASS MOCA, Bryant Park, the Camden Opera House, Tangier (LA), Vermont Arts Exchange, and has been featured on NPR and radio stations nationwide.

JACOB GARCHIK: PREMIERE OF YE OLDE

Thursday, March 26 at 9:30PM

$15

Jacob Garchik returns to Joe's Pub with newest project Ye Olde, a band that is developing a sound that can be described as the contemporary vibe of a soundtrack to a 1970's remake of a 1930's movie about the Middle Ages. Ye Olde features Garchik on trombone, Mary Halvorson, Brandon Seabrook, and Jonathan Goldberger on guitars, and Dan Weiss on drums.

TOMMY WALLACH: WE ALL LOOKED UP BOOK/ALBUM RELEASE

Friday, March 27 at 9:30PM

$15

Tommy Wallach and his band perform to celebrate Wallach's debut novel We All Looked Up (Simon & Schuster), which MTV describes as Skins meets The Breakfast Club meets Lars Von Trier's Melancholia. Wallach and his band will be playing through We All Looked Up: The Album, the companion record written by the author that will release simultaneously with the novel on March 24. Joshua Pickard of Nooga calls the album "lyrical and ornate but not needlessly complicated, with enough strings, guitars and Wurlitzers to make Sun Ra blush."

COURTNEE ROZE: THE MUSICAL

Friday, March 27 at 11:30PM

$15

Following her ground-breaking performance at Carnegie Hall, Courtnee Roze presents The Musical, an international sound and visual narrative that celebrates the triumph, hardship, versatility, barriers broken, and accomplishments in Roze's life journey. Roze acts as The Musical founder, facilitator, lead vocalist and percussionist.

MATT RAY
Saturday, March 28 at 9:30PM

$18

Matt Ray, whom Across the Arts UK calls "wonderful - so instinctive," brings his solo project to back to Joe's Pub. Though Ray is best known for his work as pianist, backing vocalist, and music director for downtown luminaries like Joey Arias, Justin Vivian Bond, Taylor Mac, Bridget Everett and Lady Rizo, it is his own original songs that remind us of what music can and should be: real, dynamic, soulful, and honest. He has worked with Burning Spear, Anita O'Day and many of the world's top performers. An eclectic mixture of folk, jazz and originals, this solo show draws from Ray's three albums as well as mines material from the American songbook, and introduces brand new songs.

KOOL KEITH: GOT MY OWN BAND

Saturday, March 28 at 11:30PM

$20

"Rap iconoclast and general eccentric," (Brooklyn Vegan) Kool Keith debuts his live band, Lucky Bears Foot. An original member of New York's new-school pioneers, the Ultramagnetic MCs, "Kool" Keith Thornton is best known as a solo rapper. His signature style is stream-of-consciousness lyrical flow and complex vocals, two skills that earn him a perennial nod from the underground hip-hop community. The average Kool Keith album is peppered with bizarre, disjointed, even delusional or disassociated themes, concepts and references. Nearly all of his albums incorporate a satirical dislike for more commercialized strains of hip-hop, as well as major record labels.

JULIANE JONES & BA BAN: CHINESE EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC

Sunday, March 29 at 9:30PM

$16

Singer-songwriter and ethnomusicologist Juliane Jones joins Ba Ban Chinese Music Society in an exploration of East/West cultural exchange. Their Chinese Experimental Music live show uses popular music conventions to curate Chinese traditional music genres of kunqu opera, guqin song, pipa and xiao music and Buddhist chant. Jones writes songs (in Chinese, English, and French) that evoke the astute and playful lyrics of Serge Gainsbourg, and the vivid narratives in the French Chanson genre with elements of Canto-pop music, inspired particularly by the Chinese artist Faye Wong. Ba Ban features pipa virtuoso Zhou Yi and bamboo flute master Miao Yimin. Ba Ban perform on silk and bamboo instruments at renowned concert halls around the world. Acclaimed Chinese opera (kunqu) artist Qian Yi collaborates with Ba Ban in bringing Chinese traditional culture to global audiences.

TRAVIS SULLIVAN'S BJORKESTRA / SHERON

Tuesday, March 31 at 9:30PM

$15 Adv / $20 Door

Blending Bjork's visionary techno-pop with the harmonic and improvisational elements of modern jazz, composer / arranger / multi-instrumentalist Travis Sullivan has created Bjorkestra, a truly unique big band that transcends genre and style. Comprised of New York City's finest jazz musicians, this 18-piece ensemble features full horn and rhythm sections as well as a female vocalist performing Sullivan's arrangements that span Bjork's entire catalogue. Individual members of the Bjorkestra have performed and toured with the likes of Charlie Hunter, Clark Terry, The Spam Allstars, Jessica Simpson and the Saturday Night Live band.

Sheron's recent debut EP "Ghost Hopes" is a short sneak peek into the singer/storyteller's interpretation of pop music. From rumbling traditional Tuvan throat-singing and soaring tenor melodies, an Egyptian oud and a string ensemble, or just a simple acoustic guitar, the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist uses his vast, colorful palette to weave intricate designs into what he, smiling lightly, calls "audiofilms."

Produced by a stellar cast of Grammy Award winners including long-time supporter and inspiration, Ray Benson (a nine-time Grammy winner who produced Carolyn's 2008 breakthrough album Miss Understood), two-time Grammy winner Larry Campbell (the force behind The Band drummer Levon Helm and his recent comeback) and founding Monkee, Michael Nesmith. The album was recorded at Benson's Bismeaux Studios in Austin and also at Helm's studio in Woodstock, NY.

AZANIA / LYNETTE WILLIAMS, PRESENTED BY APUTUMPU

Friday, April 3 at 9:30PM

$15 Adv / $20 Door

Originally from Sierra Leone, Azania is an award-winning, multi-cultural artist, who was raised in the U.S. & in Geneva, Switzerland. Her captivating voice, powerful energy and positive charisma make her a phenomenal performer and a joy to see on stage. She has performed over 800 concerts around the world, at venues like the famous Blue Note Jazz Club and the legendary Apollo, as well as the Blues Alley in Washington D.C. A true chameleon, Azania loves exploring various facets of her voice in different styles of music. During her 12+ years of classical opera voice training, she performed in many different bands of not only soul and funk, but various styles from jazz to disco, electro/house to gospel, reggae to musical theater.

In her latest album, RISING, several songs are inspired by the groovy soul and funk era of the 1970's. However Azania's compositions evolve from diverse musical influences. "I simply compose what I feel, and I'm inspired by different styles. To me what's most important is the message and emotion of each song. If you feel it, that's all that counts". Reflecting her warm personality, Azania's lyrics are often enriched with uplifting and positive messages. She's currently composing songs for a new album, co-produced by Jeremiah Abiah, to be released in 2015.

Harlem-grown singer songwriter Lynette Williams is a recent graduate of Berklee College of Music with an MBA. Williams wants only to pursue music, though. She is currently a back-up singer for Lauryn Hill both live and on Ms. Hill's recordings. Williams has also toured as back up for Miri Ben-Ari over the past two summers and she may be called accomplished by some for a singer still considered young to the Music industry. But Lynette Williams is a songwriter and an artist in her own right and is fighting to avoid becoming lost in in the background. Williams should be recognized for her own artistic prowess. Williams is on the cusp. This exquisite singer, who is both beautiful and enchanting is becoming recognized for her own material and as a recording artist in her own right.

$12 Adv / $15 Door

Sweet Megg and The Wayfarers will transport you, not to the past but to a new world of their own making. The band seamlessly incorporates elements of Dixieland, Harlem swing, Parisian cabaret, and gut bucket blues into one charming musical performance. Saxophonist Ryan Weisheit reimagines a world where Sidney Bechet, Lester Young, and Charlie Parker blow side by side. Together Sweet Megg, Weisheit, and all the Wayfarers create a world where jazz is alive and well and living in New York.

Feral Foster has been gigging in New York, across the country and in Europe for the past 10 years, capturing the imagination and attention of listeners with his impassioned singing and powerful songwriting. Foster draws from the deep wellspring of early blues, country, and jazz to tell contemporary, human stories, making for music that feels well-worn and strikingly fresh at the same time.
