Spiritual Complaint is a collection of essays that explore the biblical foundations and the contemporary resonances of lament literature. Tragedies, both personal and communal, provoke intense emotions which, in Scripture, are given expression in complaints or laments.

Bringing together the works of biblical scholars, liturgists and practical theologians, Bier and Bulkeley present a range of essays that explore a variety of responses that arise from Scripture, the liturgy of the Church, and beyond, to tragedy and a fractured world. The first section, entitled 'Foundations', offers new contributions to scholarship on Jeremiah, Lamentations and Job; and provides an ongoing discussion of the relationship between lament and penitential prayer in the Old Testament. The later essays reflect upon theological and pastoral handling of such experience and bridge the biblical and contemporary worlds, bringing together specialists from different academic fields to provide a resource for integrating faith and scholarship in dark places.

Spiritual Complaint is an excellent resource for theologians and students with an interest in lament literature.
