Pirates and Vaudeville to Bring Family Fun to the Waterfront Museum Barge, 9/28-10/5

This year Red Hook's antique wooden barge is celebrating its 100th birthday with old-time family entertainment. Sponsored by Investors Bank & Brooklyn Bridge Realty, this series of two one-man performances features two Sunday spectaculars by a vaudeville comedian and a Pirate. Fall Family Fun entertainment aboard the historic Waterfront Museum & Showboat Barge Sundays, September 28 and October 5 at 1pm. First Come, First Served.

DeadPan Alley, staring Will Shaw plays September 28 and is a one-hour, one-man performance of physical comedy, verbal wit and expert skill. Audiences of all ages will be thrilled with astounding and hilarious displays of juggling and balance, fancy cowboy roping, flying boomerangs, rare and amazing spinning top manipulations, hat tricks, sight gags, audience participation and clowning steeped in the traditions of the great comedians from the silent film era to the present. DeadPan Alley also features serious (and not-so serious) musical presentations with the piano and harmonica. Will Shaw has performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Sesame Street and was an instructor for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus Clown College.

PIRATE SCHOOL! staring Billy Bones the Good Pirate plays October 5 and is the premier family-style comedy pirate act in America. This one-hour, one-man vaudeville show has enthralled thousands of families for over 15 years with it's mischievous blend of clown theater, adept magic, zany musical score and boisterous full-audience participation. Awarded Best of NY Kids Entertainer by New York Magazine, veteran actor David Engel has worked in TV, commercials and film and has been seen on stages across the US, Europe, and Asia.

Come aboard and marvel at the George Rhoads Ball Machine and view "Land in Sea" - works by Stephen Mallon hanging on the barge's walls. The works feature large photographs of NYC projects that have used river barges including the recovery of Sully Sullenberger's plane from the Hudson River, the creation of a fish reef using subway cars and a video montage of the delivery of the Willis Avenue Bridge.

Hosted by Captain David Sharps aboard the beautifully restored Lehigh Valley No. 79, the Waterfront Museum is housed aboard this only surviving wooden example of "The Lighterage Era" (1860-1960) -- an era in transportation and commerce history when goods were transported by tug and barge across the NY Harbor. The Lehigh Valley No. 79 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Group Tours are available daily by appointment by calling (718) 624-4719 or by visiting www.waterfrontmuseum.org. By Subway: Take the A,C,F or R to Jay Street/Metro Tech. Right outside, take the B61 bus from the corner of Smith and Fulton Streets (Fulton Mall) towards Red Hook to the Fairway stop. The bus ride takes about 15 minutes.

OR take the 2,3,4 or 5 to Borough Hall stop. Walk a few blocks to the corner of Court Street and Atlantic Avenue and take the B61 bus from outside the CVS to the Fairway Stop. Walk one block down Beard Street in the opposite direction the bus is going. Turn left onto Conover Street and walk 1 1/2 blocks to the Waterfront Museum.

By Bus from Park Slope: Take the B61 bus from anywhere on 9th Street to the corner of Van Dyke and Van Brunt Streets. Walk 1 more block down Van Dyke in the direction the bus was going, turn left onto Conover Street and walk 2 1/2 blocks to the Waterfront Museum.

OR take the free weekend Water Taxi shuttle from Manhattan Pier 11 to the IKEA Stop. Walk west along the waterfront to the Waterfront Museum.
