The Farm Theater announces their 2017 season, which will include the 3rd Annual College Collaboration Project with playwright Morgan McGuire, a co-production with the Planet Connections Theatre Festivity, new installments of the popular bi-monthly Bullpen Sessions, and a new monthly Directors Roundtable series. The Farm Theater will also continue to offer workshops in play development throughout the year and their annual Grad School Audition Workshop in November.

College Collaboration Project

With Maryland Area of Community Colleges Performing Arts Collective

Featuring playwright Morgan McGuire

February - November 2017

The College Collaboration Project has multiple schools commission an early career playwright to write a play that each school will independently produce throughout the academic year. The faculty, students, and playwright collaborate throughout the year in the development of the text. The 2017 Collaboration is with the Maryland Area of Community College Performing Arts Collective (MACCPAC) who have commissioned playwright Morgan McGuire to collaborate with students and faculty from Carroll in February, Howard in April, and Prince George in November. The play will be developed and produced during the spring and fall semesters.

In 2018 The Farm will collaborate with Southern-Birmingham University (January 2018) and West Chester University (April 2018) on a commission by playwright Jan Rosenberg.

The Farm Theater's 2015 College Collaboration play, In The Event of My Death by Lindsay Joy enjoyed a sold out run this past summer, produced by Stable Cable Lab Co. The 2016 College Collaboration, Love 95 Times by Micheline Auger, has been nominated for the David Mark Cohen National Playwriting Award by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

The Floor is Lava

The Farm Theater will produce The Floor Is Lava by Alex Riad (The Farm's 2017 literary fellow), directed by Jessica O'Hara Baker (The Farm's 2017 directing fellow), as part of the 2017 Planet Connections Festivity. The Floor Is Lava was developed as part of The Farm's inaugural reading series, THE DRAFT.

Last season The Farm Theater presented Artistic Director Padraic Lillis' solo show Hope You Get To Eleven or What are we going to do about Sally? at the Planet Connections Theatre Festivity where it was awarded Outstanding Overall Production of a Solo Show. The Farm Theater is excited to continue to build their relationship with Planet Connections and to produce new plays by emerging writers in this very supportive environment.

The Draft Reading Series

August 2017

The Farm Theater will present three new plays in our annual reading series The Draft. The plays will be written by early careers writers that have developed through workshops at The Farm Theater.

Bullpen Sessions

Bullpen Sessions are a bi-monthly meeting where theater professionals are invited to talk about their experience on a specific topic of interest for pre-professional and emerging artists in an intimate setting. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions, engage in open discussion, and share their experience on the topic. Bullpen Sessions will address basic questions about the industry, share best practices, and build community.

The Director's Roundtable

The Farm's new Director's Roundtable series was inspired by a recent Bullpen Session with directors Daniella Topol and Moritz van Stuelpnagel on the topic of directing new plays. The Director's Roundtable will be hosted by The Farm Theater Artistic Associate Scott Illingworth and will address the art of directing, practical issues that come up in the day to day work, and navigating a career in directing.

The Farm Theater The name is inspired by the "farm" system of baseball whose role is to provide experience and training for developing players. The Farm Theater develops early career artists that may not have the support system afforded others, through workshops, productions, and mentoring. The centerpiece of our programming is the College Collaboration. This program in our first year developed a play that will be produced Off-Broadway in the fall of 2016, was published in Indie Theater Now, and the project was featured in an article on HowlRound. The Farm Theater since its inception has hosted Bullpen Sessions, which are free bi-monthly conversations between special guests and early career artists. Special Guests for the Bullpen Sessions have included Rajiv Joseph, Lucas Hnath, Anne Washburn, Paul Schnee, and Halley Feiffer. The Farm Theater also offers skill-building workshops throughout the year. The Farm Theater was inspired from Founding Artistic Director Padraic Lillis' twenty-five years of experience working directly with over 2,000 early career artists, developing multiple award winning new plays, and collaborating with artists working at the highest level in their field.
