The Fugard Theatre in Cape Town has received 8 prestigious Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards nominations for productions presented in 2014. The 50th annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards ceremony takes place this year at the Artscape Opera House on Sunday 15 March at 6pm, the same venue where the Fugard Theatre will be presenting their grand scale production of Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's WEST SIDE STORY from 23 July- 23 August.

A HUMAN BEING DIED THAT NIGHT has received four nominations, for Matthew Marsh as Best Lead Actor in a Play, Noma Dumezweni as Best Lead Actress in a Play, Nicholas Wright for Best New South African script and Daniel Galloway for Best Lighting Design (Original Design by Tim Mitchell).

In the category Best Set Design, Albert Maritz has been nominated for PLAYLAND, and Saul Radomsky for THE SHADOW OF THE HUMMINGBIRD. Both plays were written by Athol Fugard, who also starred in the latter production. For the Fugard Theatre's production of PLAYLAND, Albert Pretorius and Mbulelo Grootboom have been nominated as Best Lead Actor in a Play and Best Supporting Actor in a Play respectively.

The Fugard Theatre, whose Founding Producer is Eric Abraham, is proud to bear the name of Athol Fugard, arguably South Africa's most significant and internationally acclaimed playwright.

David Kramer's new musical ORPHEUS IN AFRICA is currently on the boards until 22 February 2015 after which the highly anticipated CABARET opens with an all star South African cast directed by Matthew Wild. Louis Viljoen's new play THE PERVERT LAURA has picked up four 2014 Fleur du Cap Theatre Award nominations and transfers to the Fugard Studio Theatre in May 2015.
