GET to Host Panel on Morality, Ethics in the Medical Community After ELEPHANT MAN, 11/7

Georgia Ensemble Theatre (GET), North Fulton's only professional theatre company, is honored to host a community discussion on Friday, November 7th, following the 8pm performance of The Elephant Man at the Theatre's home in the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. "Human Dignity:" A Discussion with Medical Professionals on Morality and Ethics in The Elephant Man will feature panelists including Judith Dennis, MD (Medical Director of Roswell Urgent Care Center), Brooke Kamke (Director of Nursing Analytics and Systems Innovation at Emory Healthcare), and Kristie W. Koch (Business Analyst for Emory Healthcare Nursing Quality). Several cast members from the play and the production's director, David Crowe, will also be participating in the conversation.

This Tony Award-winning play is a moving and beautiful drama based on the life of Joseph ("John") Merrick, a horribly deformed young man who has become the star freak attraction in traveling side shows in 19th century London. Celebrated physician Frederick Treves takes Merrick into his care and introduces him to society, where Merrick evolves from an object of pity to a witty favorite of the aristocracy. But is this just another side show? Merrick seeks desperately to achieve his ultimate dream: to become a man like any other.

The Elephant Man is directed by David Crowe, and features actors Jonathan Horne, Sam R. Ross, Rachel Garner, Theo Harness, Robert Wayne, Holly Stevenson, Steve Hudson, Trey Harrison, and Kate Johnson. This production is generously sponsored by Macy's.

About the Community Discussion:

Following the 8pm performance of The Elephant Man, audience members are invited to join in this discussion of patient dignity as addressed in the play. Topics and questions will be generated by a moderator, but audience questions and discussion are welcome. Some issues that may be addressed at this informative discussion include: the nature of the doctor-patient relationship and how that has changed over time; how to treat the patient that is "untreatable;" the responsibility of the medical field to patient dignity; using a patient as a means to an end; and more.
