BWW speaks to Tamar Broadbent about her 2016 Edinburgh Fringe show Get Ugly.

What can you tell us about Get Ugly?

Get Ugly is a musical comedy about embracing life without a filter, with songs about dodging hipsters, envying gym girls, and keeping body hair under control. It's got live piano, cheeky backing tracks, and many tales of joy mingled with mortification about being a single girl in the modern world.

What inspired Get Ugly?

Newly single and surrounded by trendy people in East London, I started being overly aware of how lame my trainers are, and comparing myself to all of the cool people. I wondered how I have spent so much valuable time in life worrying about smudging my eyebrows, and how you go about escaping from such ridiculousness. Thus Get Ugly was born - a pop-fuelled medley of stories and songs about finding self-worth in the age of the selfie.

What have you been up to since your last Edinburgh Fringe performance?

I moved to London and into an abandoned warehouse. I met someone who asked me to call up an ex-girlfriend and pretend to her that he was dead and say she wasn't invited to the funeral...

I moved out of the abandoned warehouse.

I gigged in lots of exotic places like Manchester, Cardiff and Guildford, was a finalist in the 2015 Funny Women Awards and Amused Moose Laugh Off, and performed at Dave's Leicester Fest and the Bath Comedy Festival.

I also had a haircut. Thanks for not noticing (tut).

Who would you recommend Get Ugly to?

Everyone who's not my Grandma. She's 92 and I like having her around, and I fear that one of the more naughty songs might finish her off.

Are there any other shows you're hoping to see at the festival?

Jenny Collier, Axis of Awesome, Jonny and the Baptists, and ALL of my friends' shows. I have 28 days: watch me blitz this mo-freaking festival. (She's already asleep with a herbal tea).

Timings and ticket information for Get Ugly are available on the edfringe website.
