Theatre Nation is proud to present the UK premiere of ZOO MOTEL, a mysterious and playful live streamed theatre work. Filled with Thaddeus Phillips hallmark theatricality, Zoo Motel is a live interactive and intimate play performed on a bespoke set broadcast via zoom from a village in Colombia, South America. Thaddeus Phillips is one of the USAs most internationally acclaimed theatre artists, directing and touring his work across Europe, Asia and South America and is known to Edinburgh Fringe audiences for 17 Border Crossings (Summerhall & Aurora Nova 2015) and Inflatable Space (Assembly Roxy & Aurora Nova 2019). Steven Dufala is the extraordinary artist who designed the global theatrical hits Home and The Object Lesson for Geoff Sobelle. Zoo Motel is an inventive exploration of the possibilities of live virtual theatre and the magic of cinema and was co-created with artist/designer Steven Dufala via video conferencing, with set pieces fed-exed from Philadelphia to the micro theatre space conjured in Thaddeus home. Performed for a strictly limited audience of 21 nightly, the show is built on zoom using a specially designed miniature camera crane serving as an eye to allow for 360 tracking and panning camera shots and for quickly shifting perspectives. Phillips trained with master New York City magician Steve Cuiffo on various illusions and card tricks that integrate the other motel guests (audiences) into the event. The mysterious Zoo Motel feels straight out of a Michel Gondry film and is populated with paintings of the Mojave Phone Booth, the Osuchi Wind Phone, a copy of the Voyager Golden Record, a Japanese Maneki-Neko beckoning cat, a miniature Titanic, and various other eclectic surprises. Zoo Motel opened in October in the United States via venues in Miami and Los Angeles and has quickly become a cult hit of online remote performance, extending twice and selling out weekly gaining a worldwide audience with virtual motel guests checking in from such diverse places as Hong Kong, Wellington, Montreal, New York, Portland and Singapore. Guests at the motel have included filmmakers and theatrical luminaries such as Robert Lepage who said after the opening night: Thaddeus Phillips Zoo Motel is a playful & inspiring theatrical poem, an act of resistance against the current creative inertia.
