Guest Blog: James Pearson and Lizzie Ball on Creating RONNIE SCOTT'S CLASSICAL SERIES at The New 'Upstairs at Ronnie’s' by Guest Author
- January 26, 2026 It’s been an interesting process creating the very first weekly classical concert series at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club together with James Pearson. We’ve developed several entirely new programmes, particularly for one of our programming strands, Close Up Classical. A great deal of time is currently being spent working out exactly which musical choices work best for each concert programme, as we’re dealing with a small stage (a maximum of seven musicians) and, at times, large-scale orchestral works that need to be cleverly reduced for a small chamber ensemble.

Review: JO - THE LITTLE WOMEN MUSICAL IN CONCERT, Theatre Royal Drury Lane by Cindy Marcolina
- January 26, 2026 Is there a story more universally connected to the experience of girlhood than Little Women? Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 coming-of-age novel is a beloved read across the world, with its descriptions of sisterly devotion, struggle, love, and loss. The March sisters - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy - have woven themselves into the lives of women and girls since their publication. The March sisters are also no strangers to the theatre, and this is not the first time that someone tries to adapt it for the stage, and we’ve had quite a few less-than-deserving examples that shall go unmentioned.

Review: BEAUTIFUL LITTLE FOOL, Southwark Playhouse Borough by Aliya Al-Hassan
- January 25, 2026 There is something that remains so alluring about the chaotic and ultimately tragic lives of F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. The booze, the breakdowns, not to mention the immense talent. Michael Greif's new musical, Beautiful Little Fool, tells their tempestuous story from the perspective of their adult daughter, Scottie. An intriguing concept, but the show fails to get beyond something shallow and unsatisfying.
Review: ASYLUM KING, Collective Theatre by Franco Milazzo
- January 24, 2026 It was probably a dark, rainy night when Francesca Marlowe came across the mysterious case of the dead asylum seeker. Plumes of vape smoke flowing from her nostrils, she turns the facts over in her head. The man had not been in the country long, or at least not long enough to accumulate deadly enemies. The coroner’s report had all the right words in all the right places but looked about as truthful as an election manifesto. And, to cap it off, the corpse was found in a locked room after some days had passed.
Review: GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU?, Royal Court Theatre by Debbie Gilpin
- January 24, 2026 What would you do if the results of your 20-week pregnancy scan were not what you were expecting? Would you continue with the pregnancy and adapt to the serious additional needs your baby is likely to have, or could you take the decision to have a termination? That is the choice facing Rosie Sheehy and Robert Aramayo’s characters in Guess How Much I Love You?, the current production in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs.
Review: A GRAIN OF SAND, Arcola Theatre by Cindy Marcolina
- January 24, 2026 Since the 7th of October 2023 nearly 20000 children have been killed in Gaza. This number doesn’t include the kids who are still buried under the debris, or maimed by the bombs, or missing. Israel’s strikes on the innocent are ongoing, even after the so-called ceasefire came into action last year. The Arcola Theatre is presenting an intimate one-woman show adapted from Leila Boukarim and Asaf Luzon’s collection A Million Kites: Testimonies and Poems from the Children of Gaza. Written and directed by Elias Matar under commission of the London Palestine Film Festival, A Grain of Sand is a harrowing look at a senseless genocide. Though incredibly powerful, the production is flawed and doesn’t fulfil its dramatic potential.

Review: EMBRACE, The Hope Theatre by Amber-Rae Stobbs
- January 23, 2026 For a first-time production to have this level of professionalism and creative mastery within the text, Glitter Bloke Productions ought to be very proud. The moments of humour blend perfectly with those of the sombre ones. But most importantly, the cast are having fun. You can see by watching them how much they want to be there, and how important this piece is within them all.
Review: PIERRE NOVELLIE: YOU SIT THERE, I’LL STAND HERE, Soho Theatre by Kat Mokrynski
- January 23, 2026 What do World War II, dishwashers and beef have in common? They all play an important role in Pierre Novellie’s newest hour of comedy, Pierre Novellie: You Sit There, I’ll Stand Here. The show has a short and sweet description that tells it exactly like it is - “It's time for Pierre to do stand-up. It's time for you to watch.”
