De genomineerden zijn onthuld voor de vierde jaarlijkse Dorian Theater Awards van de Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics. De prijzen vieren het beste in Broadway en Off-Broadway, ter erkenning van zowel mainstream als LGBTQ+-thema producties.
“Van de radicale herinterpretatie van onze wereld in Prince Faggot, tot de tedere thema's van zelfontdekking in Schmigadoon!, het is een prachtig seizoen geweest van queer storytelling op de New Yorkse podia,” zegt GALECA's theaterafdeling co-voorzitter Sam Eckmann.
“Naast de nieuwe LGBTQ-verhalen waar we verliefd op zijn geworden, waren we trots om te zien dat eerdere Dorian Theater Award-winnaars Cats: The Jellicle Ball en Titaníque nieuw, fabuleus leven vonden op Broadway. Onze verhalen verbinden zich met een breder publiek en zijn duurzaam op podia groot en klein.”
Schmigadoon! ontving negen nominaties, de meeste nominaties van alle producties. De nieuwe Broadwaymusical is aangepast van de Apple TV-serie met dezelfde naam, die liefdevol eerbetoon brengt aan de musicals uit het gouden tijdperk. Naast biedingen voor Outstanding Broadway Musical en Outstanding LGBTQ Broadway Production, is showmaker Cinco Paul een dubbele genomineerde in de nieuwe categorieën van de Dorian Theater Awards: Outstanding Original Score of a Broadway Production en Outstanding Book of a Broadway Musical. Acteurs Sara Chase, Max Clayton en Ana Gasteyer zijn ook genomineerd.
Direct achter Schmigadoon! komt de vampier saga The Lost Boys. De epische staging ontving acht nominaties. Dit omvat een nominatie in de nieuwe categorie Outstanding Design of a Broadway Production, evenals drie nominaties in de Outstanding Featured Performance in a Broadway Musical categorie, voor acteurs Shoshana Bean, Ali Louis Bourzgui en Benjamin Pajak.
De regisseur van The Lost Boys, Michael Arden, is een dubbele genomineerde in de twee speciale categorieën van de groep: LGBTQ Theater Artist of the Season en LGBTQ Theater Trailblazer. De andere genomineerden voor LGBTQ Theater Artist of the Season zijn onder andere Obie-winnende toneelschrijver Shayok Misha Chowdhury, The Rocky Horror Show ster Luke Evans, baanbrekende kostuumontwerper Qween Jean, Titaníque co-creator en acteur Constantine Rousouli, en Ragtime's belangrijkste man Brandon Uranowitz.
De genomineerden voor de carrièreprijs van de groep, LGBTQ Theater Trailblazer, omvatten Arden; ballroomicoon Junior LaBeija, die momenteel zijn Broadwaydebuut maakt in Cats: The Jellicle Ball; drie keer Tony Award-winnaar Nathan Lane; regisseur en acteur Joe Mantello; en de irreverente veteran director Sam Pinkleton.
In de Off-Broadway-categorieën van de groep domineerde Prince Faggot.
